If the RAF were to offer you 20K today and wanted an on the spot answer...

would you sign on for 22 years as an SAC?

(for this situation, promotion prospects would not change and the money would have to be paid back if you PVR'd before the 22 year point)

SAC's and JT's are already getting signed onto 22 without the offer of money....

Let's say you'd done 12 already; that's 2k per yer or £100 per month after tax.

If you'd done 2 years, it's £50 per month.

Fcuk all really so my answer would be no.

No. Professional development, career prospects, being valued and job satisfaction are more important to me than a lump sum, half of which the tax man would take anyway.

That said, the money could prove useful I suppose, but it isn't enough to sign 22 years of your life away.

No I've seen too many who did that the last time it was offered, too many timed out at that rank or if they did get promoted it was with only a few years to go. Now I'm not sure if it was because the promotion boards were less inclined to promote them because they'd already signed or because they chilled out because they were onto a pension as soon as they left, I'm not sure. But I think you may end up going backwards in your career as it was too easy to kick back and not push on to the next rank. I know not all ended up this way but from what I saw too many did.

Difficult one. When I was an SAC I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I wouldn’t have needed a £20K incentive to sign on for 22 years; I would have accepted it gratefully.

In this modern day Air Force……..not a chance and unfortunately that is just a sad reflection on what the Air Force has become and not my lack of judgement.

Bombs, good hypothetical question (I am assuming it is and not that you know something we don't......) To be honest, since they started these retention bonuses I would like to see the stats to see if it makes such a difference. Do we need such bonuses when the world is FUBAR on the jobs front? That is a good incentive to stay in at present i reckon. Its the age old problem, give somebody a little latitude and it gradually becomes the norm to get bonuses for every rank and level (look at the farce with the Civilian PADR bonus schemes). Everbody wants a slice of the pie. Also, High pay band is now becoming the norm for many trades (mine being one of them) but I see the technical trades point of view that they feel undervalued. When I joined I just missed out on the bonuses anyway so never missed what I never had, good luck to you if you can get it......:pDT_Xtremez_26:

Off Topic As a SNCO i am not looking for a bonus ( feel free to throw one my way) but it would be nice to be able to take up to 50% of my gratuity to use as i see fit while still in service. That would still leave me a fair bit of money for when I retire. I know many SNCO's that leave specifically to get their hands on the money to buy a house etc. Maybe that would help retention for experienced SNCO's that we seem to be losing in ever increasing numbers IMO. Any SNCO's share my view? Give me any views why it will not work before i speak to CASWO!
