Wonerful, provocative thread. Another take on this particular "house of cards" is that we have PR10 (most of the originators comments were based on PR10 "think pieces" I suspect) and SDR to consider/worry through amid other changes - not least the fallout of the Nimrod Review. I'm intrigued to know who in the RAF has the time to undertake this fundamental change of our "modus operandi" amidst all the other **** that is being chucked tthe windscreen!

[*]EAW concept will be reinforced with more combination of assets which will mean a lot of movements for Sqns with the possibility of AT, rotary wing and possibility of Typhoon (as an eg) all being based at the same unit (Super Base) and then deploying as one unit, very similar to the Army garrison concept.

Makes sense, if you have real estate large enough to accommodate 7 Operational GR4 Sqns, or maybe the powers that be are thinking of scrapping 4 of them, seeing as harriers managed to man up HERRICK with 3 Sqns for 5 years!

[*]Smaller specialised units being amalgamated to reduce administration burden.

Great! That will mean less officers, as they wont need a Sqn Ldr/Wg Cdr to command each little bit!

[*]All BSW/PSF functions being taken on by civillians and Admin devolved to individual sections. Everyone will have a small admin cell and these will deploy with the section (EAW concept).

Well, as a FJ Sqn Clk, I do this anyway, and have done for about 16 years, so its only the 8-5 Mon-Fri brigade that avoid the front line that are in for a shock!

[*]Loss of X- Factor for non deployable personnel but with the ability to opt out, so some trades will have the choice wheter they want to deply or not. To aid retention, however, the X factor will be based on RAFT, CCS etc and will be a much larger amount.

I can see the increase in salary (or more likely a cut if you fail!) coming in through competencies on JPA, but the first bit sounds like the ramblings of General Melchid!

[*]New pay spines for technical trades linked to competencies so if you are based on an EAW superbase and are Q'd to work on rotary and hercs then you will earn more than a technician just Q'd on rotary. Basic pay spine increase will be awarded on completion of Phase 2 Trg.

People who fix our most important asset should be paid more than the likes of me - I think you'd be hard pressed to find a single member of the non-TG1/2 trades who think they deserve the same salary. However, the key word is "fix", and I fully believe that those on 1st line should get a competence pay that runs for their time on 1st line, and those on 2nd line get a competence pay that runs for their time on 2nd line etc. Those who are not currently fixing aircraft should not get extra money - the argument about "knowledge" isnt true (I have an SAC with a BSc(Hons) who gets paid peanuts compared to other BSc Hons).

[*]Leave compensation. If you have leave left over rather than lose it at the end of the year you can 'cash it in' aprrox £30/day for Jnr Ranks, £60 day SNCO's and £100 for Officers..

About time too. This has been mooted for longer than PAYD. However, it would be more appropriate to be able to "Bank" up to 3 days untaken leave per year and add it to your terminal leave.

[*]No posts will be screened if you are fit to deploy you will deploy

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when CAS or some other Airship has to answer his own phone/drive himself/dress himself etc because his personal PA/Driver & Steward are all OOA!

Great ideas about pay there mutty.

So I have to take a drop in pay cos I don't actually fix aircraft any more - but do use my knowledge on a daily basis to help those who do.

How much motivation will that create I wonder.

And before you ask - yes, I am still in my main trade but work for one of those wonderful Project Teams!

And the reason I haven't deployed for 3 years is Manning hasn't asked me to!

Techies rarely get the choice of where they are going to work and usually find that on Posting, someone else has jacked them onto 2nd Line so they get the 1st Line job.

2nd Line is just as important as 1st - and people who work behind desks making decisions that make the 1st Line guys job easier should not be penalised! I worked 1st Line for 19 years then a thing called promotion got in the way and like most other techies (GE's and NDT apart), once you get to Chief, you rarely get your hands dirty again!

Great ideas but not ideal to have your Cpls and Sgts on more pay than the CT and FS!

Penfold and Stevie perhaps I should have put in some of those smiley things in as well as my Rupert and Zob references to indicate it was a light hearted attempt at humour. Apololgies if I offended.

Probably my first ten F6442 mentioned my suitability for commissioning and one Flt Cdr in particular did all he could to persuade me; but I was happiest covered in oil all day and chasing fast ladies all night. I did think about a branch later in my career but was wise to all the politicking and backstabbing in the EngO world by then.
