I agree with scaley brat, i don't think 35% of voters didn't like any of the above I suspect apathy did have alot to do with it, and that means the zealots who want to wreck the country get in because no one cares. I'm not red either.
I have to aggree with you 100 % .But if you made everyone vote .How could it be covered (if you know what i mean)they could just get there ballot paper get there named ticked off and write bollocks on the paper or just leave it blank (then they have not actualy voted have they ???)

I would strongly support the use of compulsory voting - but for NATIONAL elections only. Ideally these days would also be a Public Holiday to help access for the Voters to Polling Stations. (And may also meant that polling stations would also know how many voters to cater for)

Compulsary Voting does not mean that you MUST vote for one of the poor candidates - but you MUST turn up at the Polling Station to account for your Ballot paper.

If, as has mainly been the case this time, many candidates are all the same idiots in different wrappers and not worthy of your choice, you simply have to ruin your ballot paper by marking it in ALL the boxes and put it in the Ballot Box - it's counted as a ruined paper and is not traceable to you.

Ruined Papers are not illegal, merely not used for the vote because of some abiguity. (Remember the fuss over George "Dubya"'s re-election?)

The Compulsary Vote also ensures that most of the public cannot just dis-associate themselves from national politics as they currently do for local politics.

Voting should be compulsory, but there should be a 'none of the above' option. If that option wins none of the candidates who stood in that election are allowed to stand again (ever) and a (local) voter is chosen at random to represent the constituency in parliament for 5 years - simples. Next problem please ...

Great idea. It really worries me that one day we willl be so apathetic that only the idiots will vote and one day we could wake up to the monster raving loony government, or worse!

Definitely not compulsory voting, but there should be a lower limit to turnout before they are forced to start all over.

If politicians cannot galvanise at least 70% of the legally entitled population to vote, then there is something wrong.

I didn't vote because it is my right to choose not to.
I knew I didn't want Brown to remain in power, but I couldn't decide who I trusted more to replace him.
As it turns out, both parties are in power. For me that 'non vote' worked out perfectly.
As for cumpolsory voting, no I don't agree with it. Having a 'none of the above' vote is exactly the same as not turning up in the first place.

Not really, it's turning up and saying "I don't think any of you deserve my vote". What it does do is show that you are public spirited enough to make your mark and it wasbn't apathy that stopped you voting!

Call it what you like, but there is no reason to turn up and say I don't trust any of them when not turning up will make the same point.
It's a bit like these idiots who pay to go to watch a football match, but turn their back on the game to make a point. Just save the money and effort by not turning up, and empty stand is far more inulting than a full one looking the wrong way but giving them cash for the privelage.
