I am on a 12 year engagement at the moment, I have my tapes and will complete my TMT later this year so the option of 22 should be available to me then. My wife qualifies next year with a degree in nursing and I need to know if I leave at 12 or 15years what kind or money do I get from the RAF, do I get the option of signing for 15 with my tapes or no option and straight for the 22.
I am toying on the idea of leaving if the outcome is financially viable.
Any infomation on this post will be greatful as I dont want to turn up to PSF without some guideance.
Many thanks.

You won't get an immediate pension if you leave prior to completing an appropriate pensionable engagement (22 yrs). You will receive what used to be known as the Individual Resettlement Grant (It may have changed it's name), currently around £9,000 I think.

I'll answer your 2nd question first: Once you have completed TMT (I take it JMLC is already done) you will be offered substantive promotion and then you will be offered futher service to complete 22 years.

If you leave after 12 but before 22 years the only immediate payment you will get is the Resettlement Grant. You will have to wait until you are 60/65 (depending on which pension scheme you are on) to receive your preserved pension. IIRC the Resettlement Grant is about £8500, but if that's wrong someone will correct me soon enough.

Dont get me wrong, I love being in the RAF and would be happy to stay in, but I want to see what is best for my family, and as I get older I have to concider my age on leaving and establishing life there after.

Thanks for the link, I have worked out a few problems running around my head (yes I know its a small place to run around in). It sort of opens new questions I have to ask myself and where I go from here, and how it effects my family with housing and education. Is there anyone else in my sort of predicament or am I just thinking too deep?:PDT_Xtremez_11:

I came out at the 12 year mark and confess for me it was a mistake. However kids apporaching 9 and 7 and both already had 3 schools each at least. Offered 22 but Leuchars approaching fast on the horizon so I jumped.

£3.5K gratuity which seemed like a lot, 3K pay rise + OT pay which was a lot and a transfer of preserved pension rights into new fund meant when ill health struck 2weeks before my 39th birthday I retired on a healthy pension.

Had I stayed in I don't think I would have been as financially secure as I am now as I bought a council house for buttons 18 months after leaving but I would have been a fcuk sight happier.

sorry if I have muddied the water a bit

To be honest I'd sign on as you can always jump ship at any time you see fit (granted it may take 12 months). You won't get your pension till 22 years sentence completed, however you will get your resettlement grant.

With jobs as they are in nursing at the mo you may need the guaranteed income that you are currently getting. I only say these things as Mrs FLT just so happens to be a nurse and is glad to be away from the NHS as it's in a right $hit state at the moment.

Good luck to Mrs Pikey for the rest of her course, I know how much hard going it can be. (assuming you are married)

Got to agree with FLT don't think of it as signing on for 22 years more like signing on for a rolling 12 months contract that YOU can break when your circumstances require. If you don't sign your exit date is fixed if you do it's as flexible as you want to make it or the system will allow. Got a pen ready:PDT_Xtremez_03:

Pikey do us all a favour and fekk off now, we couldn't wait to see the back of you. Wobbly told me he only got you promoted to get rid:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Regret at leisure

You've got nothing to lose by signing on if fact you'd even gain a little (20 days re-engagement leave if it still exists), get it all in before you put your notice in.

Come across a few people who did not sign on because the had no intention of staying in long-term - problems in life come along and they end up being kicked out when they least needed it.

I'd wait until your missus gets settled then put your notice in if you still want to leave.

Worth noting that the Air Force aint normally at such a high tempo in a few years things might have calmed down, then again it might have got worse.

Don't make any decision now wait until you have to and look at your circumstances then.

To answer your housing query Google JSHAO - Joint Service Housing Advice Office. They have links to every council in the UK which will take you straight to the allocation policy of each. If you want to know about anything from purchase to self build they can give you the gen - its all on the sire. Failing that if you cant find what you need give them a bell; they are there to help.

Thanks all who have helped. I have decided that signing on for 22 is the best option and will re-assess when the time gets closer.
Mrs UP and I are trying to think wats best for the Under Pikey's with schooling and the such.
Again thanks to all who have helped.:PDT_Xtremez_30:
