20 MPH speed traps

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
^^ What he said.

Schools and small residential roads on enclosed estates where kids play are not appropriate places to be doing 30mph. I'm in favour of it as long as these 20mph zones are kept to the right places.

On my road the limit is 10mph as it's a tiny, one way street, and full of kids playing. It doesn't stop delivery men and wifeys etc smashing over the speed ramps at 30 plus. We could do with more enforcement here.

They should have 20mph zones around ALL schools during kicking out time etc

4 housing estates in my hometown, 1 has 20 mph limit. I think it's a great idea, especially as SSH says, around schools.

I hate to admit this though, I think the one estate with a 20 mph limit has it beacause they made the roads so narrow and twisty you probably couldn't do 30 anyway.

Quite right Yoss, enforcement is the key.

Agree with the general idea of 20 mph around schools, but, why around the rest of town centres? Its road safety madness. This nanny state is getting worse! And as for policing it by speed cameras - two words. Stealth Tax.

When you drive past schools in the states, there are at least 3 eric estrada lookalikes ticketing people for speeding, treble fines and points for transgressing in vicinity of schools

Personally I am all in favour of a general reduction of the default speed limit in all built-up areas to 20mph for all of the reasons given above.

On safer, segregated urban roads, the speed limit could be increased accordingly with appropriate signage.

With this reduction in the default national speed limit in built-up areas from 30 to 20, there should be a national re-think on all speed limits: 50mph for single carriageway trunk roads (with all vehicles, large and small, restricted to 50 thus reducing the 'need' for over-taking and increasing safety), maybe a further reduction on B-roads but an increase in limits on dual-carriageways and motorways to 80 mph. I would even then consider variable speed limits and also the option to close the outer lanes to HGVs during peak periods to prevent the rolling road-blocks caused by over-taking lorries. The increase in motorway limits will also have to increase the limit for HGVs to prevent a large difference in speed between vehicles.

(flame suit on, awaits incoming)

Well there aren't enough police to enforce it, so how else can we slow people down? It's simple, if you don't want to get a speeding fine, don't speed. The benefits of speeding in a built up area are minimal anyway!!

At a school in *cough* Key West *cough* I used to drive to work by at the dropping off and picking up times there was a temporary speed limit of 15mph...There was big flashing signs at each end of the short zone telling you this and why and they employed what looked to be a retired coloured guy wearing a luminous vest and gloves in the middle of this zone and if you looked to be vaguely getting close to 16mph he would yell and point at you in your car and you had to drive right past him so you got the full force...this made everyone look at you in disgust and you felt like a freshly scorned puppy...

I doubt in any child has been knocked down or seriously hurt outside this school with this regime in place...Good on them.

I agree with the 20mph limit in built up areas. Here in swampyland its 30mph round the main road through the married patch but 20mph down all the streets with speed bumps every few metres. However i would love to see a speed camera planted at the end of my road. I live up the top near the shop just on your way out of marham, the way some people speed down over that hill (which is a 60 zone) coming into marham or speed up coming out is just mad! Just at the end of my road is one of them flashing 30mph signs but it does c0ck all to actually slow anyone down! I have had heart failure everytime i take my kids to school despite holding their hands, that part of the road frightens the life out of me!

I don't have a problem with 20mph zones, what's up, people got a rush of hormones or summat? As usual, the ones who bawl loudest are those who think they can drive beyond their capabilities and actually can't.

Anyway speed fines are a tax on the terminally stupid. And as for boy (and girl) racers wiping themselves out... Hip hooray, the Darwin principle in action...

No problems with 20mph zones either but its not just the policing of the roads we need to consider, how about education of the pavements!!!! keeps kids out of the roads and slower driving will both bring down the death toll. Its not just drivers that cause the problems, some parents dont seem to keep their kids out of the roads!! Just a thought!

Keep cars off the pavement and we wouldn't have to walk in the road Grrrr!!:PDT_Xtremez_25:

Dear god no, I canna' go any quicker when on the motorway at 50mph without wanting to blow my engine up, while putting the speed limits up to 50mph on most roads would mean I'd be getting overtaken all the time. :PDT_Xtremez_09:

Good in theory, but in practice I doubt it would work (probably partly why it's not changed to date).

i'm not talking about speeding - i'd hope there is a sensible speed limit (30) for urban areas that do not have schools on them. By all means reduce it where it is needed. But it is not needed in many urban areas, so why penalise those of us who can safely drive at 30 and don't feel the need to boy race it about????

Off Topic i'd much rather see a ban on driving for lazy parents who can't be arsed to walk their kids to school and feel the need to drive them there.:PDT_Xtremez_25:

And whilst i'm here, why not make it 10mph or go complete circle and make horseless carriages have someone walking in front of them with a flag to warn people???? (Minor rant over.....)

Why are you cruising past scools looking at Bike Cops SSH??

Here in the land of the jumping rats they have very well signposted variable speed restrictions around schools. Most of the time it's 60 KPH but for the couple of hours whilst the kids are going to school and when they finish, the limit drops to 40KPH. Everybody abides by these limits as they're sensible (oh, and if you are caught speeding in these zones at the times specified they throw the book at you, double points on your license).

But, then again, everybody drives fnucking slowly here anyway!
