Okay Euro 2012 the two guys behind the goals with black police batons in their hands what is their job exactly. Having watched most of the games they appear to have done nothing to help the ref, I don't recall a single incident in which they have contributed anything at all. If they contribute nothing why bother?

From Wiki - Two assistant referees are positioned behind the goal lines, in order to "ensure that the Laws of the Game are upheld, informing the referee of incidents of any kind that he may otherwise have missed, particularly in key areas of the field like the penalty area and its surroundings," but only informing the referee of their observing through a wireless communication system.

Complete and utter bullocks if you ask me. I have seen many incidents happen in the box where they have not helped the ref in the slightest. A waste of cash these two and the sooner goal line technology comes in the better.

The guy in the England/Sweden game gave them a corner when Joe Hart failed to control a sh!te backpass but other than that, I completely agree! I think half the battle is that they speak with the Ref on their comms so you don't see them do anything like wave a flag or blow the whistle. It would be interesting to let the commentators have the sound from the comms to relay to the viewer like cricket and rugby.

I think the main aim of the officials was to give the Ref an extra pair of eyes, to stop all the shirt pulling and blocking going off in the box at corners, but this has failed, as it still goes on.

A total waste of time as these guys don't want to be the one to tell the Ref that there should have been a penalty awarded and to then be then proven wrong, with TV evidence and ruin there chances of moving into the middle for the next major championships.

As HS has said the only decision that has been visible to TV viewers has been the decision aginst Joe Hart.
