Ref that 'water ingress' test.
Why didn't the engine go out ? Or did I miss something?

I do hope that never happens at Witt. Where I work is right in the line of fire should that happen at the test beds there :0

In that case mate, there'll be a stacker to stop it and put it back into stock!:PDT_Xtremez_31:

Blade off testing, theres one pretty consistent factor in all of them (apart from the destruction of course) it adds to the likelihood of sucess and reduces the carnage if the test is a failure, anyone know what it is?

Engine? In stock? It has been a while, hasn't it mate :PDT_Xtremez_31:

Not really changed, mate.
25 years ago at a South Yorkshire airbase, we had to rob engines to keep the fleet going. Now't changes.

For those wondering what the white flakes are on the, "Rolls-Royce Trent 900 Bird Ingestion Test", it's a polystyrene casing that encases the, "Bird", to create a good seal for the gas gun that fires it.

Oxford Uni have a supersonic gas gun for blade research that bends blades quite nicely.

On the subject of things going wrong, I bet the Engineers carrying out the full power runs on this American Airlines B767 needed a change of underpants!!

The ground runs were being conducted by maintenance staff following flight crew reports of abnormal vibration on the left engine at high power settings. The GE CF6-80 'let go' big style with the HP turbine disc exiting the engine casing like a bandsaw and embedding itself in the exhaust casing of the No.2 engine. The damage sustained is quite astonishing - see HERE

Yeah, isn't it just! We use this in our teach to demonstrate the forces that are unleashed if any of the rotating components hops off the engine during a ground run. It is staggering to think that the turbine comes from the No1 engine but the section is sticking out through the outboard side of the cowling on the No2 which is on the other wing!
