So, what does Steve 'which way is up' McLaren do now then?
Just as Bobby Robson discovered his best side by accident in 1986 when Captain Marvel Bryan Robson was ruled out with a dislocated shoulder, through the absence of key 'names' so Stevie seems to have stumbled across a combination of England players that appear to work well together.
Unsurprisingly these lads, who would never have got a look in had Rooney, Lampard, Hargreaves and Beckham been fit, are playing a similar role for England as they do for their club. The result has been a joy to behold; expansive football, possession of the firkin ball and opportunities created a-plenty. The above named quartet haven't suddenly become cr@p overnight, but the team seems to have balance and purpose without them.
What does he do, what DOES he do next.
For the record, I'd go with the same team again for Estonia at home.

Is they are fit, fcuk them, he has to stay with the team that just played two of the best England games in how long??

Barry was great, more up for it than any of the ‘’bigger’’ names that are out at the moment. His link ups with Gerrard, lay offs and crosses were nearly all good.

Heskey looked like he wanted to play, rather than the usual faces that think they have made it just by being selected.

Nice to see Owen back on all cylinders, 40 England goals… will he go on to be England’s greatest goal scorer?? Hope so.

Robinson looked good in goal, but will he fade again??

The back four were exposed at times, left a bit flat footed by the faster of the Russian players, but with Barry pulling back the extra cover was there when needed.

Wright-Phillips, please stop crossing on the ground, try lifting the ball!! I counted 6 of his crosses that went to the Russians, lift the fcuking thing!! Heskey, Richards, Terry and Barry have better heads than you, trust them…

Barry should have got man of the match, but Owen did score two, unlucky Barry.

Just my thoughts, can’t wait for the next match… can’t remember the last time I ‘’wanted’’ to watch England play.

Well done the Scots and Welsh too…

Stick with a winning formula. The lads in the team now have "Want" and I can't knock them at all for what they have done over the last 5 days. I just hope they can carry it on throughout the qualifiers and all the way through to the final of Euro 2008.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching last nights game. Sadly i missed saturdays due to work but from things i have heard since then, last nights match was pretty much a perfect replay! I think Mclaren would be daft to change the line up. It works well, you only have to look at the results and the stats. Owen has scored 14 goals in 14 matches with Heskey by his side, what does that tell you?

Agree with everything you say there PSBM - apart from your final sentence. Get rid of Rio (despite a goal) - this guy lives on a hugely over-rated ego and belief in previous mediocraty; the only reason he plays is because Tony Adams and Professor Steven Hawkins are not fit yet.

Agree with you Late, Before the game an old guy came and spoke to me and said exactly the same thing, we need someone with strength and 'presence' instead of Ferdinand, another John Terry would be nice.

perhaps Neville at right back and Richards to centre half in place of ferdinand?

Got to agree looks ike England in 1986 all over again

Okay so Wednesday night sorts it all out after the Russia v Israel game so who will that master tactician Mclaren pick?

More importantly who would you pick for Wednesday's game?

TB'S TEAM
Keeper - Carson
Back 4 - Richards, Terry, Campbell, A. Cole
Midfield - Wright Phillips, Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, J. Cole
Striker - Crouch
Bench - Walcott, Ferdinand, Beckham, Green (GK)

Why would you want to play 4-5-1 when we have to attack and win the game. We can't afford to sit back and play for a draw. I would play the following:

GK - Carson
Def - Neville P, Richards, Campbell, Cole A
Mid - Wright-Phillips, Gerrard, Barry, Cole J
For - Crouch, Defoe

Get W-P and Joe Cole hitting the touchline and getting crosses that will bounce off Crouch and Defoe can pick up the pieces.

C'mon England!

Surely Beckham's got to play? If Lurch is playing Centre Forward, his only chance of scoring is with his head & Becks is the only one that can put it in the right place for him.

Yep, McLaren has to sort out a defence from these: Bridge, Campbell, Lescott, Richards, Brown, Cole, Neville, Shorey.

I reckon he'll go with Neville, Richards, Campbell, Cole.

OOOOPs not so. Just seen on Sky that Terry may play (Why for FFS if he is not 100%) and Ashley Cole is deffo out. Bring Bridge in??
