Hello Everyone, I'm a newbie and very confused at the moment!

I developed a musculoskeletal condition during phase 1 training. I've now been told my med docs have been forwarded to Henlow and my doctor has told me I'm probably going to be Medically Discharged - which is fair enough: I'll never be able to go out of area. I firmly believe this condition can be attributed to my training. My exit date whenever it happens will be past my 2 year point and I'm on the new pension scheme.

However, I spoke to some of the med admin staff yesterday and they said there's a chance I could be Admin Discharged for Medical Reasons. I've never heard of this before, I'm assuming it would mean I'd walk away empty handed and with no resettlement? Also it sounds like a disciplinary thing! I've not done anything wrong and I've NEVER had this condition before.

Has anyone ever heard of this? I'd really appreciate some advice. Thanks :)

speak to the WO at the med centre and the chief clerk get them to spell out the whos whys and whatfors.

Thanks, although that's what i would do but it's easier said than done to get to the med centre for the next few weeks. I did ask when i was there but didn't get much info. They said it wouldn't be a dishounorable discharge, but that was it. i spoke to the British Legion who told me it would happen if I didn't meet the crrect criteria for a Med Board - I've yet to find out what this critria is. I would go and see the SMO but I can't get back to my parent unit for an appointment for a while. I just don't want this hangning over my head for the next few weeks if I can help it.

Otherwise guess i'll just have to "hurry up and wait", oh, and cancel the ressettlement courses incase I'm not entitled to them after all :(

You need to see a resettlement advisor, even if its not the one at your unit nd try and cover all bases.

I would also try and get an appointment with a doc at your nearest unit for some advice. Having been through the med board system I can relate to what your going through.

First of all I would go straight to my F/S or even WO bypass the cpl and Sgt, they dont have the power.

Get the WO to ask on your case, get firm facts and get them to ask the questions YOU WANT. Thats what they're there for, after all WO are a law unto themselves.

What have you got to loose, yes you might **** a Sgt off, but if you want to stay in or get what you deserve. Do it.

What you did'nt mention are you still in trade training or first posting.

If you have any questions just PM me, I have gone through the same thing, and today is my last paid day.

I was discharged by ACOS manning, I would tell your Flt Lt what is happening and keep them informed, and go down to see your Chf clk, he should be able to help you alot, HOWEVER with JPA and JPAC they are next to useless (still waiting for a reply since sept) and they deal with everything to do with your discharge so the chf clk will be hindered by that.

You will also be contacted by the service personnel and veterans agency who will help you deal with the medical side and housing and welfare, best thing to do is contact them as soon as possible, even though they will contact you it could be too late to help you settle where you want to.

For example under present guide lines if you leave the RAF normally and want to get a council house in that area you can not because time in the block or MQ does not count as a connection with the local area and you will be told to do one, but if medically discharged the agency will get you on the list to receive a house/flat straight away.

Any help required mate just let me know.

Thanks everyone, I've managed to get an appointment with a civilian doc at the med centre next week to chat about things - but it's a CMP so they know the deal (and wrote the letter that went to Henlow).

I'm actually still in phase 1 training but thankfully on the new pension scheme so every day of service should count towards my pension and related benefits - bit of a godsend really. Just waiting for a pension/benefits quote if I were to receive a full med discharge.

Pie Sandwich, will definitely pm you soon, thanks for the offer of advice. Also will ask my WO at my holding post if he can ask some questions.

Hello All

Thanks for all the advice. Had my medical board about 6 or 7 weeks ago and was recommended medical discharge. Apparently the only way you get an Admin Discharge for Med Reaons is if there's outstanding Admin stuff to be dealt with - I'm assuming the doctor meant 'disciplinary' stuff so that's sorted.

hey there soon2becivi

i am wondering if you could share your experience with me as i am currently faced with a routine discharge for medical reasons aswell...

and am wondering if what you have been through could help me work through mine

thanks

I got an admin discharge for medical reasons. I was still in phase 1 training. My discharge papers rated my service conduct as exemplary and reasons given was "not likely to maintain the RAF medical standards". Seemed like a bit of a cop out to me. I didn't question it though. Out on my arse with nothing! I showed my discharge papers to a security company and they couldn't understand it as it wasn't a med discharge strictly speaking but my conduct was exemplary so not strictly speaking an admin discharge either! BTW, I got the job with the security company, they weren't impressed with the manner of my discharge at all.

One point to be raised here is that the RAF Medical Board are not the final authority on what actually happens to you. They merely record the medical details and their opinion as to your ability to carry on serving with whatever medical complaint you appeared before them with. The details are then passed onto the 'Much Higher Ups' at ACOS Manning who make the decisions as to whether people stay in or leave or can be retraded to different branch in the RAF. The medical services are currently awash with ex-rocks!
