A mate lives on the patch at our unit and has been detached to another for several months. Where he is detached is not where he works, he works in the town centre several miles away from the unit where he actually lives.

No messing available for lunch (and sometimes tea) but he's been told that as he lives on the patch at our unit he can't claim for any food and was told to make some meals up at the weekend and microwave them for lunch and dinner/tea if he misses that meal too.

Is that how it is in the regs?

I can't remember the exact AP ref but if it is unreasonable for him to travel to a Service establishment for a Core meal then he can claim Day Subsistance. There is also Meals Out Allowance, it's only about £3.50 a meal but it adds up over the month. He needs to get online and read the allowances AP and start putting claims in, tell him to start saving receipts now.

I live in SFA and work away from a main unit, I claim MOA (Meals Out allowance). But my parent unit have dictated at which rain, I think I can claim a max of 4.35 a day. You must have at least 9 receipted meals a month though.

Meals Out Should be payable at least, unless there is a subsidised canteen nearby, was he offered accommodation nearer and turned it down?

It may be possible for Day Subsistence to be paid but that's a bigger ask in todays times.

The aim of Meals Out Allowance (MOA) is to contribute towards the additional costs necessarily incurred by Service personnel who are required to eat regularly at commercial retail outlets because either:

a. Their duties at their assignment station regularly prevent them from eating in a British or Foreign messing facility or government subsidised canteen;
or
b. There is no British or Foreign messing facility or government subsidised canteen at their assignment station.

It's not a huge amount though, the main meal was about £4.20something last time I looked but every little helps.
