Right guys. I am seriously considering a career in the RAF, but have a tattoo on my lower forearm [before my wrist]. I have read the RAFs tattoo policy; no ink on the head, neck, wrists, hands, and tats cannot be of a racist etc nature; which my tattoo abides by (its a compass about the size of a pocket-size vaseline tin). When the policy mentions it needs to be hidden when wearing full dress, i assume this is long sleeved - which would most certainly cover... However i've heard and read contradicting things, that anything visible when wearing short sleeves means you would be turned away... Also, i went for an interview with the RN when my tattoo was very much visible but the guy never said anything... Thanks for any info you may give.

What kind of compass is your Tat?

Have you got a pic so we can further advise?

I would say if it's coverable by long sleeves then all should be fine....I knew of a WRAF officer who had large tribal tats down her leg.....she never had any probs.

As always though best speak/go to AFCO to see what they say....always best to get your fears/worries out early so they can be dealt with.

Best of luck.

The only people able to answer this question conclusively will be the AFCO. Go and see them.

As long as it is covered up in No. 1 Dress (same coverage as a lounge suit), you aren't applying to be an officer and it would not be considered offensive then you are in the clear.

thanks guys, i have got an appointment at the AFCO but it's not for a couple of weeks - so i started to wonder about it... re 3wheeldtechie's comment; i was looking around for something to compare it too and that was the first thing i saw! nuf said! cheers.

Taking a wrist

Taking a wrist

If the tats on your arm then it needs to be no lower than where your long sleeved shirt will come down to as a guide the wrist band on you watch is about the limit of the bottom of the tat. If it's on your right arm then a little bit higher may be required for when you salute.

As others have said, the AFCO need to sign it off so it's their call.
