The latest IBN about the NEM states that all SACs on for 9 to be offered automatic service to 12 years in the next few months. Up to them if they take it and must not be out before 1 April 15.

In 1978 I remember a J/T AFittE "retiring" at the tender age of 55...signs of yesteryear?

That doesn't smack of sheer and absolute panic at all.

Not one little bit.

Where is the panic in all of this. We are giving our juniors the option to serve for longer if they want to. Seems pretty good to me! Additionally if they take it, they get there 10k resettlement grant which can also make repayment of any home loan they take out under forces help to buy. Sounds pretty good to me

The panic is about the large number banging out and the need to retain experience.

And TBH, Is this not a common sense move?

I remember the rigmorole trying to sign on to 12 years and that was back in 1995. On det, no comms and no deal. I had to fight for it when I got back to the UK.

12 year engagement, with measured options to leave is good!

A slowly developing recognition maybe that we can have good "career" SAC's who maybe can't gate promoted because of their limited trade promotion prospects and/or are just happy doing a professional job on the ground without worrying about all the management garbage you get at the higher levels??? 3 year rolling contracts as per MPGS? As long as they are fit and able, why not?? And I'm not talking about fitness test fit, I'm talking about operationally fit.

I wouldn't be surprised if NEM goes along with these principles as it develops and it would be good if it does.

A good organisation wants to retain its professional, trained staff for productivity. And for those that do want to get promoted, Promex examinations and interviews as well as SJARS.

Can you still sign on to 22yrs as an SAC as they did a few years ago? Just a question that came up in the tbar. Oddly the navy bummers sign up for 22 from the start!

We didn't have management garbage, fitness tests (just the occasional circular letter to all ranks, promoting the delights of circuit training, from a corporal in the gym) or GDT (except at RTS and OCS) when I were a lad. To be sure, we had to fire 20 rounds annually but there was no obligation to hit the target. But total professionalism in your trade or specialism was demanded, compliance was rewarded with promotion, lack of compliance earned the Order of the Boot and no prospect of a job in civvy aviation.

Actually the issue is about the RAF not being able to meet its ITTs next year, and this is one way in which to close the strength and liability gap before we go into SDSR - ET rates has very little to do with this.

ITT = recruitment targets, recovering economy will have quite an effect.
