Alternative ways to become an RAF engineer?

Hi guys

First of all I am not in military service at the moment. I have my heart set on becoming an RAF engineer. According to the official website, you need a degree in engineering to cut it (which is not possible for me).

I was wondering if there were any alternative ways to reach such a level. Would becoming a Royal Engineer in the British army count for anything? I wouldnt suspect so considering they are 2 entirely different aspects of engineering mostly.

Thanks for your time and I appreciate everything you guys do for us. Hopefully one day I will be able to join the ranks!

Depends on what your view idea of an engineer is. Have thought about applying for the aircraft technician roles? I am about 99% sure that in both the, Aircraft Technician Avionics and Mechanical trades, there is opportunity to get a degree/HNC if you put some extra effort in. There is also nothing stopping your applying for an officer trade latter.

There are two disciplines for Eng Officers to follow: Aerosystems (AS)(basically mechanical) and Comms/Electronics (CE). Both disciplines require specific degrees that are accredited by certain bodies. Only specific universities offer accredited degrees. For AS, you will require a degree in Mechanical/Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering that is accredited by IMechE and the Royal Aeronautical Society. For CE, you will need a Electronic/Electrical Engineering degree that is accredited by the British Computer Society. If you are currently at uni, liaise with your University Administrator who should tell you if it is accredited. If you are planning uni, you should look at going to a place that offers accredited degrees. If you have already graduated from uni, then unless you hold an accredited degree, then you will dip out. Harsh, but that's the way it is.

I will PM you the details of the people who would be the best people to liaise with.

If your not in and looking at Engineer officer later on in your career join up as a aircraft techie or a ICT tech to get some hands on experaince .

Then in a couple of years you can apply for the Fengo course which is a 18month foundation degree at cosford then off to cranwell for IOT , complete that and do your engineering after study and your a engineering officer with out the degree.

I think you need to have some gcse's but i know that the ICT tech trade training covers your min education requirements for the Fengo course if you go down the Engineering officer (CE) route , not sure what the (AS) is like

Degrees for AS / CE

Degrees for AS / CE

As a further note on the degrees per each specialisation, I have a BEng Software Engineering and have checked with my AFCO and indeed applied for an Aerosystems role.

Edit to add that the requirement was that my degree my accredited by the British Computer Society - you can check that on their website if your Uni, like mine, doesn't have a clue about what day it is, much less their accreditations.

Hi guys, I have a friend who just graduated in Geomatics research at Nottingham University. He said wonders about the tools used, the facilities and the tutors. I will definetely be joining this Uni by next year. The thing is, I don't know which engineering field I should aim at to join the RAF. Which one would you suggest and what can I do in the RAF with my degree?
