Hello all, I have a question about asthma when already in the RAF that I'm looking for advice on.

Im currently a ground trade SAC, hopefully going to be offered my tapes in the next couple of months, and currently in the very early stages of applying for my commission (ground officer).

My question is regarding asthma, for a couple of years now I've been having regular coughs and colds and I'm starting to wonder if I might have asthma. My reasons for not going to the medical centre so far are basically in worried about the future of my career if I'm diagnosed (eg permanently downgrade, not being able to sign on, officer application dead ect ect)

Im just wondering if anyone out there has any experience of what happens when asthma is diagnosed and you're already serving?

Any input appreciated

Why do you think that it's asthma? It may be nothing at all.

On the other hand, asthma could in extreme cases kill you!! Get it checked out! Rather be un-employed than un-living.

I developed an allergy to cats (!) Went to SMO who gave me 2 x types of inhaler and an epi pen. Didn't affect my deployability.

Important is your health. During my yuff in the eighties I knew a cpl who had epilepsy and had his seizure while an inspection was on. Your health is more important as it would be for the service. You know it may flag up an issue for H+S in work environment.

At one point in time I was diagnosed with Asthma by the SMO and subsequently downgraded for the six months mandated by the medical publications. I was then sent from the North of Scotland to London for an Asthma clinic, cushy over night stop in Chelsea to be told after 20-30 minutes of allergy and asthma tests, "Yeah you don't have Asthma off you pop back home."

I have deployed on a number of times since with no problems.

I'm the same as Elwood, allergy to animals and some red wines induces asthma. Med centre weren't really interested and sent me away with a repeat prescription for an inhaler and antihistamines.
