Well, after a couple of years of happy motoring in my Bavarian diesel-powered monster, I decided that I needed more space and as I'm cycling to work each day, could do without the extra service costs for a diesel that barely does 400 miles in a month. Plus it was nudging the 100k miles mark. It also had one of the unreliable garret turbos.

So, I traded it.

For....

(roverboy will love this)

a 3 and a half year old MG ZT-T 190+ (V6) in Trophy blue with a mere 21k miles on the clock.

Financially it's near enough a straight swap. The MG has leather, FSH and Audio upgrade. It goes like stink and the V6 howls like a banshee when given a hard time. Lovely.

Got an awful lot of car for very little money, and beat the dealer (ex- MG-Rover) up suffeiciently to stangle both a good trade-in for the beemer, a few quid off the screen price of the MG and a full 12 month warranty.

And for those who are interested, the Rover 75 has just been voted UK used car of the year for the 2nd year running. Personally, I'm not surprised - I'm very impressed so far - the car seems really solid and great to drive. Comfy on a motorway cruise, bags of grip and grunt on a B-road blast. Perfect.

Me neither. I very nearly had one of those a couple of years ago when I test drove one and sometimes wish I had gone for it. Talk about a wolf in sheep's clothing! A little bit out my price range for the one I wanted though at the time. Happy motoring though BEngO.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

I wouldn't thank you for a newish one, as my MGF was the most unreliable car I ever had, but for sheer disposable motoring my £390 Rover can't be beaten.

At least you'll be able to drive in the non overtaking lane of a motorway now and you'll probably find that people let you out at junctions now:PDT_Xtremez_15:

Did the dealer also throw in a flat cap, pipe, slippers, leather driving gloves and has it got the optional Sunday Driver speed Limiter attached that ensures you go at least 10 mph below the speed limit:PDT_Xtremez_30:

no. But strangely, it did come with a queue of 10 cars behind it.

:PDT_Xtremez_25:

Look. It's a ferkin MG, not a Rover. A completely different beast...

I agree - I wouldn't touch a Rover K-series 1.8 engine in any guise with a 30-foot bargepole. My own MGF never put a foot wrong, but it was very new. Search Google for 'Head gasket Failure': first 30 hits are all rover K series 1.8 litre lumps in either Rovers, MGs or Freelanders.

Thankfully the 'Drivetrain' V6 is fairly bullet-proof. **knocks furiously on huge piece of old english Oak**

Yep ours was barely 18 months old with the VVC 1.8 and the head gasket went at 16,000 miles. Got rid as soon as.

'tis a shame as the MGF is/was a cracking little car. When Mini BEngO is a bit more grown up and I have a lot more disposable income, I'd consider an old MGF as a weekend toy; but I'd keep a close eye on the coolant levels.

And I'm led to believe that there is a fix to the weak Head gasket now.

My K series 1.4 went as well, but it was an easy weekend's work to replace the gasket and a good chance to replace the cambelt too. The new kits come with steel locating dowels (as opposed to the original NYLON ones !!!) and the new gaskets are strengthened ones.

Something you will no longer be able to do once you are a responsible parent with minibengo on board:PDT_Xtremez_30:

True. But MiniBEngO won't always be there. My new Zed-Tee makes sunday morning trips to the 'Household Re-cycling Centre' feel like a round of the British Touring Car Championship! :PDT_Xtremez_14:

(sssh! Don't tell Tigger...)

Same V6 that was in the Freelander too, right? If it is, then we've got three of those engines in bits at work. :PDT_Xtremez_14:

I've had my big MG ZT-T V6 for a couple of months now.

I love it more each time I drive it! I just love the way the boot gobbles up all of Mini BEngO' stuff like prams, moses basket etc with loads of room to spare. The seats are really comfy too.

It's a fantastic car and I'm dead chuffed. Rovers have a bad name - undeserved in the case of the 75/ZT IMHO. But I don't mind, it means they are nice and cheap to buy used.

Sounds like a really roomy boot. Why not fill it right up with a bulk order of head gaskets and a spare engine?

:PDT_Xtremez_06:

I have been driving the Rover 75 estate for 13 months now and I would advocate it anytime. It has a BMW 2.0 diesel engine, lots of bmw influence.

HOWEVER.......

There is one problem with mine. It really doesnt like starting (as in wont!) with less than a quarter tank of fuel. It'll run fine, just wont start so I need to make sure I stop at a service station if out on a run.

It is a lot of car for the money though.

No need.

I haggled a 2-year complete warranty out of the dealer.

plus the KV6 tends not to suffer the same rate of HGF problems as the 4-cylinders.

Which means something will go wrong with it 2 yrs and 1 day after you bought it, so get rid before then!!!!!!!!!!!!
