After a bit of help here regarding Medical Discharge.

Ive been having trouble with a bad back for a few years now, Im not downgraded or anything like that, I still do my fitness test and OOA etc. However, the visits to the docs are getting more and more frequent and to date I have had eight different diagnosis!

During a recent trip to see the doc, he was asking how long I had left in service and if I was planning to stay in and to be honest this has got me a bit twitchy.

I think my bad back happened whilst I was working on Tactical Unit doing endless humping and dumping on exercise, however I feel I have made my back worse in the gym over the years. The physio seems to think it has been caused by the gym.

Can anyone tell me in a few paragraphs where I would stand should the RAF decide I was too broken?

Cheers in advance.

I totally agree with Firestorm. What's required is a correct diagnosis and then you can at least see where you stand vis a vis further service. It may mean a downgrading but that will protect you from the Service as well as giving the problem time to heal.

I see what your are saying, Im being referred to Halton next month for intense physio, so hopefully Ill be properly diagnosed then.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how these type of things go. If for example, it is blamed completely on the gym, where do I stand then?

I know a still serving SNCO who has had his back injury worsened by "severe physiotherapy". He is due out soon and cann't sign on due to his physio injuries.
My advice is to get a proper diagnosis before you get more therapy/medical fumbling.

I'm pretty sure that the physio-enhanced injury is a one-off. There are some injuries which will not respond to treatment so perhaps this particular SNCO was just unlucky. A medical board, if it is required, will not punish you for having incurred the injury in the gym, we're meant to be a fit, healthy RAF so how could you possibly be punished for trying to keep that way?!

Cheers for your responses, I am signed on for 22 so Im not overly worried. I just wonder what exactly a med board does? Do you only go to a med board if your getting kicked out before your 22? And if this is the case, what happens to your pension and gratuity as a result?

Matter of Fact

Matter of Fact

You need to have a chat with the SMO and have the injury entered as service related, highlight the period on the tactical unit and have an entry made, this will make it easier for the future if you do need to claim.

Even if it is Gym related, you may still be able to claim in the future as keeping fit is a prerequisite for service life and therefore your back has been made worse by your service. However, if you get the above on record it'll save a lot of agro later on.

Good Luck, and don't forget you have the right to a second opinion (they will tell you this when you claim but not before)

My guess, from an experienced POV is that the blame game will come into play. Your employer will try to blame you for damaging yourself in the gym while you'll say its their fault for all the humping and dumping you did earlier on.
Without any evidence to support either case (unless you have some?) it'll be difficult to prove who's to blame. Thats a bummer as time is on your employers hands, not yours.
Good luck.
