I know we've all had them, some of us (myself included) are on them now, but what makes a det so bad you could never forget it?

Right now I'm on det, acting up in my next rank, being expected to perform with no real training behind me, with most of us being treated like crap by having our tourex dates moved at a moments notice, MT not being available for us when we get back to the UK, having silly rules imposed on us because we're part of a coalition (so we have to abide my our Yank cousins rules) and being expected to achieve 100% serviceability with our aircraft by performing miracles.

What sort of dets have you had that you remember for the wrong reasons, and why should those of us who are able to go away for months at a time really be bothered to pass our CCS, IRT and fitness tests to be treated in this way?

Oooohhhh.... my back hurts.....

I remember being in Kuwait Apod in 2003 and a few of us had to do a guard stint where we had to accompany truck drivers into the camp . There were only 5 brits there but I was the only one who had any rank (lowly cpl). A yank major gave us our brief and started saying stuff like "remember the rules , 1. tap ( the rifle) 2. shout. 3. threaten. 4. shoot. similar to that anyway however I remember the major being a bit more agressive than that. I pulled the 5 aside (still in eyeshot and earshot of the yank major) and said " bollox to what he just said. follow your green card." I thoroughly expected a kickoff afterwards but nothing happened.

Being attached to the army !! I had to do a stint attached to the pioneer corp. Talk about a bunch of people that couldn't think for themselves. They're troop sgts tried to treat us the same, but soon realised a. We were all pretty switched on (all of us were J/T's or SAC's with decent time in) b. Not interested in being pongos c. Paid more than he was (top whack JT in my case).

We'd been sent out to augment the guard force by doing control of entry for BRITFOR HQ, which had Mr TORPY as OC (top bloke BTW).

Having to spend 3 months in the states when they reduced our rates to 380 dollars a week. That was a shockingly hard det I can tell you:PDT_Xtremez_14:

Not det as such but travelling all the way from lossie to st mawgan in the summer, and then being locked down in the camp was really annoying. Working with mt and the such who were staying in local hotels while we tried to get one jet to work, oh the joy

Ah yes, but remember your red-headed step children (coalition partners) in this matter. At least you aren't subjected to the wearing of our PT gear and a 3 drink ration! (I know your cheekier than that!) It can always be worse my friend! Then again, I remember my Army days, literally sitting in a muddy foxhole for the amusement of my superiors. Its not too long and you'll be home!

Worst ever !!

Worst ever !!

I have just this weekend returned from what i believe is the worst det i have been on in 22 years service.

It was billed as a "good" det and when we found out we were staying in a 5* Hotel it seemed as if it could be true, however once we landed in Turkey we realised we were in for a really bad time.

The "hotel" was more of a prison as we were forbidden to bring in any food stuffs or drink (coke or alcoholic) with most personnel being search on entry. They must have thought us rich having to buy a can of coca cola for over £3 !

Travel to and from work was "fun" until the police started to escort us everywhere (apparently for our own protection).

Work was a joke. Most of the equipment was sent via sea freight a month before we needed it....it was still late and not there when we needed it to fly. Items supposedly couriered out via DHL never materialised. It took some personnel travelling out on the sweeper herc over 6 days to arrive.....some came civi, some by herc/C17.

I can't see how we can be called an Air Force anymore when we cannot supply enough aircraft to deploy a single squadron in one go.....I know some would say it would be different if it was an operational deployment but i don't think so.

Just to qualify the original statement, i have done the gulf (AAS, alls u died etc) but when you go there you know what to expect.

All i can say is thank god that was my last ever det with this circus.

Crack on.....................:PDT_Xtremez_09:

Sounds familiar Tashy.

I went to Allied Action in '03 in Istanbul and had the same treatment from the Turks.

Half the det went down with the trots from the cr@p food that they slopped up to us.

TBH, the sooner that Turkey is kicked out of NATO, the better.

From what we saw i could no dissagree.....as a basic standard i look at toilets.....ok in the hotels even with a "bum wash" if you so wish.

At work you have a hole in the ground addmittedley in a frigging cubicle but hey if a "long drop" is your bag ....crack on !!

I will admitt to being a complete wooss and using the womens toilet as they have a proper sit down job........Unfortunatly a few of the USA women didnt like this......if i had seen it i would have asked them to use the long drop !!!!

Turkey...NO...backward and just about to go and bomb IRAQ...CRACK ON......:raf: :raf:

Bucharest, Romania in the former Communist Party hotel. What a sh!thole. Made an Army camp look like the Ritz. I was bitten to death by piranha mozzies and fleas. I had more bloody spots than a leopard the next day. I had to stay up and get drunk with the (KGB-trained) "protection" goons the following night in order to get some kip ...
