To celebrate 40 years of Radio 1, the Beeb is bringing out a CD of 40 cover versions of tracks from each of the last 40 years, covered by contemporary artists. Was 2002 so bad they had to use a Timberlake "song"? "Lola" covered by fat prat Williams??? F*ck me, but I'm afraid that they could have been a bit more imaginitive than this:

1968 – All Along The Watchtower (Jimi Hendrix Experience) covered by The Fratellis
1969 – Cupid (Johnny Nash) covered by Amy Winehouse
1970 – Lola (The Kinks) covered by Robbie Williams
1971 – Your Song (Elton John) covered by The Streets
1972 – Betcha By Golly Wow (The Stylistics) covered by Sugababes

1975 – Love Is The Drug (Roxy Music) covered by Kylie
1976 – Let's Stick Together (Bryan Ferry) covered by KT Tunstall

1978 – Teenage Kicks (The Undertones) covered by The Raconteurs
1979 – Can't Stand Losing You (The Police) covered by Mika
1980 – Too Much Too Young (The Specials) covered by Kasabian
1981 – Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie) covered by Keane

1983 – Come Back And Stay (Paul Young) covered by James Morrison
1984 – Careless Whisper (George Michael) covered by The Gossip

1986 – Don't Get Me Wrong (The Pretenders) covered by Lilly Allen
1987 – You Sexy Thing (Hot Chocolate) covered by Stereophonics
1988 – Fast Car (Tracy Chapman) covered by Mutya Buena

1991 – Crazy For You (Madonna) covered by Groove Armada
1992 – It Must Be Love (Madness) covered by Paolo Nutini
1993 – All That She Wants (Ace Of Base) covered by The Kooks
1994 – You're All I Need To Get By (Mary J Blige) covered by Mark Ronson
1995 – Stillness In Time (Jamiroquai) covered by Calvin Harris

To be honest, I'm quite a big fan of the live lounge stuff that the BBC release. Usually quality covers and something different to the original rather than carbon copy covers!

Still wondering WTF Groove Armada are going to do with Madonna's tune!

With you there mono, looks like some interesting stuff by some great (and some not so great) bands/singers.

Heard the Foos doing Arcade Fire yesterday so should be interesting them doing Wings. Some interseting song choices and listening to some of the interviews yesterday the bands had a bit of free reign over choice.

Hopefully it will be as good as the Live Lounge album (Vol 2 must be due out soon too)

And Girls Aloud doing a cover version?

Nay, surely nay....

Nor forgetting Radio 2 was formed on the same day, and in my opinion a much better radio station today than what radio 1 is.:PDT_Xtremez_31:

Just because Iam old before my time:PDT_Xtremez_30:

But I would rather listen to Terry wogan than chris moyals (sp) and steve wright over sara cox

I was listening to it when I was a two banana. I must admit, I caught a fellow snek listening to Saga FM on his digital radio last year................

Chris Moyles, the self-proclaimed saviour of Radio 1. More like fat, odious, bigoted spunkbubble...

live lounge is ace. here has been some really good covers. golddigger by the automatic, and love machin eby the artic monkeys were hilariaous. lostprophets did cry me a river and i have to say timbertw@t ruined that song. some bloke from blue did the best of you by foo fighters which i am sad to say was bloody good. Maximo park are ace so another cover that will be better than the timbertw@t one. Girls aloud doing teenage dirtbag. teenage they aint dirtbags they are grrrrrr

live lougne 2 should be good

This is one album I think I can do without. Why cover some perfectly good tunes. Especially Amy Whinehut. Fecking waste of oxygen.

Studs, there can be no more than a handful of decent choons on that list, some of the bands they have drafted in are good, but some of those songs? Definitive for those years? B0ll0cks.

And McFly doing a Jam song? That is f*cking desecration. I'd rather throw napalm on those mincy little jismstains...

TW@TT,

I agree with what your saying McFly/Jam..............WRONG. Not only restricted on that one.

But your style in music is different to mine and others. Granted who picked these tunes were deaf, dumb and blind. But could he play a mean pinball.

unfortunately, this album cant be all things to all people. they've tried to put an eclectic mix on there, and for the most part i think it could be ok(if the bands put a bit of effort in the covers, and not just copy the original).
incidently on live lounge 2 there will be a cover of 'the black parade' by cherry ghost, it is far superior to the original
