Dont know if this is the right place to post this but someone should know...

Just wundered what the requirements are to become an instructor at RTS, on the manning intranet site there are shed loads of Cpl postings at RTS..is that for Flt staff or something else?

As an LAC i'm planning ahead abit i know:PDT_Xtremez_30: but want to know if i could apply straight away if i get Cpl, or would i need a good few years of service as a JNCO before?

Any gen would be appreciated:PDT_Xtremez_19:

I don't know what trade you are, but from LAC to Cpl may take you a very long time? I also don't know what the current situation on RTS is but when I was there many years ago they did place newly promoted Cpl's in instructor posts and then found that this did not work due to a lack of experience in the rank, power trips etc etc.

I would suggest that you concentrate on getting the experience and knowledge of both your trade and general life in the RAF, and if and when you do get promoted to Cpl get some experience in the rank and then apply.

TG17...so hopefully not as long as other trades...thanks for the response, my Cpls at RTS had all been for 15 years or more...however there was a Cpl there who had been in for 7 so just depends i guess!

I was interested in the role as i understand you have to be a drill instructor, the "white drill stable belt" wearing Cpls to do it? A role which would interest me in a few years time!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

As an Ex Tg17 & Ex DI I would say the best advice is to keep your head down and nose clean in order to get your tapes then complete at least 18 months as a JNCO before applying to RTS.

Bear in mind that Drill Instructor is only part of the RTS Instructor package and there are a number of other courses and skills that will have to be learned.

That said - easily the highlight of my time and one that I would recommend to anyone. Good luck getting the tapes first though!!

edit: head down in the work bleeding hard and be an asset to your trade sense that is!!

It's a phase and it will pass, you'll soon be normal once you get some time in.

If you are married/in a long term relationship, I suggest you stay well away from this role... as your hours will mean OH will think you are a figment of your imagination. Just an opinion.

Got to agree with that opinion. Mrs WT didn't see much of me whilst I was there.

However, it would appear that RTS is getting a bit better of late with regard to working hours.

The job itself can be stressful and sometimes infuriating but the one thing I always took away was the rewarding sense of pride that I got watching the recruits graduate on parade.

Mind you, that could also have been a sense of relief at finally getting rid of some of the little cherubs:PDT_Xtremez_35::PDT_Xtremez_30:

Working hours

Working hours

Talking to someone who recently applied, the hours are still long and not flexible, although this years big intake may be smaller next year.

A smaller intake, and more instructors doesn't necessarily mean that you work shorter hours, as ailiebird will agree.

You still get Jiffed for guard, Orderly Cpl is now a week of nights and no longer a sleeping duty... I could go on.

Also, the spouses and significant others will definately find the hours hard to deal with. I know MamaBear struggled when we first arrived, and we'd been married for ** years, with me working shift for the majority of it.

It's still the most rewarding job I've ever done though...
