Hi all,

I've recently had a medical board where they recommended me for medical discharge because my condition is still ongoing even after my operation. (injury is lower back and leg pain after micro discectomy at l5 s1)
the injury was sustained during an Interservice sport in 2014 and has prevented me from doing my primary role ever since and also stopped me sitting or standing for longer than 30 minutes, which was what they based the medical discharge on.
I am just wondering if anybody knows a bout the tier system and how they score you throughout the tiers as I haven't been given one as of yet.
I am also pretty worried a bout trying to find a job with my current injury still ongoing as I think it will hinder me in most jobs on civy street and they won't want to take on that burden.
Has anyone had any experience with any of this or had similar injury and been discharged. obviously slightly worried a bout where I will live and make money at the end of the day.

any info would be greatly appreciated.

Admin posters may be able to help you, but it looks as though you may qualify for a Military Disabled Pension.

Seek advise from RAFA or the Royal British Legion - they are both experts dealing with matters like this.

could I suggest that you book an appointment with your Chief Clerk? They will be able to explain what happens next and also provide you with up to date info. Whilst they may not have all the precise answers that you want at this minute, they can provide you with the guidance you need. You should have been to see them prior to your Med Board and also once your med board had been done, as I am presuming that it was a med board conducted at Henlow?

I went to see the chief clerk after my med board the very same day. They didn't really have any decent answers or any idea what tier I will come under. They said I will have to wait up to 3 months for all the paperwork to go through and the final decision to be made. But as of that day I'm no longer allowed to be in work. So I'm just sat in limbo doing sweet fa atm. Don't know if I should be going to find a job or what?
Yes the med board was at henlow at the start of this month.

Give RAFA a call or the Legion, they'll be able to give you a lot more advice as they deal with people in your situation every day.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

there is a tiered system of compensation through the AFCS, they will grade your injury from 1-15 if it is level 1-11 you will recieve a GIP (Guaranteed income Payment) in addition to your compensation payment. for more details you really need to be waiting for Veterans UK to be giving you the correct information, no good speculating on what you may recieve at this point.

Tiers and tariffs

Tiers and tariffs

This is taken for an FPS article on ill health and explains how the Tiers line up with the Tariffs:

AFPS 05 and AFPS 15 are completely different. These schemes do take account of the severity of the condition and they are allocated to one of three Tiers:

Tier 1 Your medical condition prevents you from doing your job in the Armed Forces, but will not prevent you from obtaining gainful employment in the Private sector.

Tier 2 Your medical condition is such that you are not considered permanently incapable of gainful employment, but your prospects of a civilian employment are significantly impaired.

Tier 3 Your medical condition is such that it is considered you will be permanently incapable of any further full time employment.

The Tiers are linked to the Tariffs used by AFCS to determine the severity of the condition and this is how they equate:

Tier 1 Tariffs 12 – 15

Tier 2 Tariffs 7 – 11

Tier 3 Tariffs 1 - 6

Those leaving with a Tier 1 award before the Early Departure Payment (EDP) point receive preserved or deferred pensions plus a lump sum from a separate scheme. Those who have reached the EDP point will receive EDP benefits instead and those who have reached pension age, the pension will be paid. For AFPS 05 the EDP point means that you have given at least 18 years’ service and are at least age 40 (the 18/40 point): in AFPS 15 it means that you have given at least 20 years’ service and are at least age 40 (the 20/40 point). Tiers 2 and 3 conditions attract an enhanced pension payable immediately. The normal pension age for AFPS 05 is 55 and for AFPS 15 it is 60. Tiers 2 and 3 attract pensions payable immediately.

Hope it helps.
