Yesterday I attended an outpatient appointment at a hospital and after reading the JSP752 I'm a bit confused about what I can claim. Obviously I can claim my mileage, however I left my MQ at 0600 and didn't get back till nearly 1430, can I claim lunch as well? And if so is the limit £5? Cheers dudes.

If you spent money on lunch, or even breakfast given the time that you left, then you can claim. The limit is £21.90 per day whether you have one meal or 3 but it is expected that lunch will take the form of a Big Mac meal or a sandwich and coffee which is where the £5 recommendation comes into play.

£5 rule is not hard and fast, if you have actual receipts stating you spent £8 on you lunch, you can claim the lot.

Oh and dont forget you car parking fees !

Right, so I can also claim for my breakfast?

Out of interest what, if anything, was to stop me spending 21.90 on lunch (assuming of course I had a reciept)?

Yes. If you were living in you would (depending on the unit) not have been able to get breakfast from the mess.

Nothing at all. If that is what you spent then you are entitled to claim it back. The "norm" for most people is to have cereal/toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and a cooked dinner so we are encouraged to do the same when on duty. What you actually do is up to you as long as you can justify the expenditure and you don't go over the limits.

Ahh but I live in quarters, does this make a difference?

None at all, the principle is the same. If you couldn't have had a meal in the mess then you are able to claim even though living out. Otherwise the argument could be that if you normally take a packed lunch into work you should have done the same for your hospital appointment. That would create a division between those who live in and those who live out which would never do. :PDT_Xtremez_17:

Thanks for your help.
