If you like Blues music have a look at Back Door Slam, excellent in support of the Who in the Isle of Man and off to Dublin with them next.:PDT_Xtremez_27:

by best band in britain, do you mean best british band? if not, i think(again totally subjectively) are The Kings of Leon, or possibly Arcade Fire. These are bands that have cut their teeth in the UK and are almost unheard of in the USA.
but, I think best british band for me is I Am Kloot; 3 albums that i never tire of listening to, brilliant, bitter lyrics; arent very successful in the singles market, but fantastic to see live. Mainstream wise i suppose the Arctic Monkeys do the trick

I like the massed pipes and drums of the Scottish regiments myself.

Bros
Milli Vanilli

My choice.........

My choice.........

My choice for best band has to be The Cure, for around 30 years have been releasing epic tracks & albums. Awesome live performers too saw them in 89 at the NEC in Birmingham, probably the best £20 I've ever spent on a concert, totally blew me away.:PDT_Xtremez_28:

Iron Maiden by far

Iron Maiden by far

The biggest band from the UK at the moment on a global scale is Iron maiden. they have sold more records than any other band on the uk scene at the moment. They have played to more people around the world and have a bigger global following than any other UK band that are still together today.
In the 21st centurary Iron Maiden are arguably the most influential metal band of all time.
They have had over 70,000.000 record sales worldwide.
they have released 14 studio albums, 9 live albums and 4 boxsets.
On 19 january 2001 they played to over 250,000 people at Brazils rock in Rio.
And have just headlined Download which is not bad consider they have been going for over 30 years
Bands like Coldplay/Oasis can only dream about becoming as big as Maiden.
and also playing to that amount of people in a gig outside of the UK just wouldnt happen.
I'm not slagging other bands off because each to there own i just wanted to provide a suitable candidate for this title.
If anyone can think of any other UK bands (still together now) that could step up to the plate then i would love to hear about them.
Cheers MD

I suppose we should list bands like The Who, the Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd - just to metion a few.

Yes these are Amazing iconic bands the Who being a perticular favourite of mine. However these bands are firmly placed in the Classics arena and are sitting back not attempting or able to take on the music industry as it is today.
Whilst Iron maiden are still in the UK mainstream (TODAY as the thread suggests) and storming the respective charts worldwide with no 1 album and single sales to this day.
They have risen to he challenge of Judas Priest, seen off Metallica, brushed aside Korn, and now stand firm against the headrush of a new generation of wannabe's.
they are a UK institution that is still going strong and not to be rekoned with.

I did mention them, but also stated that while they were huge in their day, as they are no longer touring, can they still be a contender for biggest band now? I wish they were though:PDT_Xtremez_39:

dont iron maiden have a different lead singer than the original line up?
then i would argue that it is almost like 2 bands

Yes, Paul Di'anno was replaced by Bruce Dickinson, who in turn was replaced by Blaze bailey, who was in turn replaced by Bruce Dickinson again.

And a drummer change and both guitarists..... Isn't Steve Harris the only original member left now ?

Dave Murray I think as well, as he and SH were good mates when they were young. Adrian Smith left and was replaced by Janick Gers, but came back as a 3rd guitarist. Clive Burr was replaced by Nicko McBrain on drums. There were several other changes really early on, but if you count from when the band were first taken seriously as artists (ie their first recorded album) I think that's about it mate

Not as bad as Rainbow mate, they had 17 different members in all. Ritchie Blackmore was the only original member and that was only cos it was his train set!!

but hasnt ritchie blackmore the lead singer?
i think once you lose the lead singer, it becomes a different band:PDT_Xtremez_28:

No mate, he was the lead guitarist. Singers included Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnett, Joe Lynn Turner. Blackmore was either an egostist or perfectionist, depending on which way you look at it, either way, he's a witch or something now, away with the fairies if you ask me.
