Following on from the worst signings thread, I thought I'd start a best signings thread.

So, ignoring the obviousness of McCoist, for me its between 2. Brian Laudrup, a snip at £2.3 million, and The Hammer, Jorg Albertz, also a snip at £4 million, though it was bigger money in those days.

It's got to be The Hammer IMO. The man oozed class, skill, power and determination freely scoring goals from midfield, nearly averaging a goal every other game. It was a sad, sad day when Advocaat forced him out the door, if every anybody should have had a testimonial it was him.

Dave Mackay for £5,000 from Spurs to Derby in the late 60s. I shouted to my Dad that we had signed Mac and he clipped me roundthe ear for lying. At the time Derby were a struggling div 2 side, with him in the team we won prompotion and the league within 3 years of Brian Clough signing him. 2 years later we won the leaguewith him as mnager.

5k very well spent and prolly Cloughies best ever deal.

That's easy. Lee Trundle on a free from Wrexham. Sad to see him go last summer; I haven't watched Soccer A.M. since!!

To be honest we haven't looked back since he left, I know the guy was a magician with a football, but we now have a far more stable strike force and league position speaks wonders.

What about King Kenny Dalglish, a snip at £440,000 from Celtic.
As a player:
6 x League Championships,
3 x European Cups,
1 x Super Cup,
1 x FA Cup,
4 x Leauge Cups
A couple of Charity shields,
172 goals in 355 games, 102 Jock caps and 30 goals.
Leauge/FA Cup double in first year as player manager
and best of all his Daughter KELLY :PDT_Xtremez_30:

Sami Hyypia from FC Twenty I think it was, has to be one of the best defenders the prem has seen.

Laudrup for Rangers. One of the best players of his generation, nearly won the Golden Boot at France 98 and Denmark didnt make the later stages. Simply unbelievable.

Cant forget Gazza though or Giovanni Van Bronkhurst, bringing back Bazza, and countless others over the last half a century.

How much did Leeds sell Cantona to The Scum for?

The list at Rangers is endless:
Laudrup
Albertz
McCoist
Gascoigne
Wilkins
Prso
etc
etc
Had to add Marco Negri. Didn't last long but what a striker he was.

Like I say on the other thread, Mr Wenger has made some fantastic signings, but Arsenal's greatest has to be Denis Bergkamp signed for a snip at £7.5M in 1995 by Bruce Rioch.

Gianfranco Zola was also a bargain for Chelski at £4.5M at around the same time; one of Ruud's I believe.

Hmmm I'd actually rate him as a really bad signing. 4 years of not playing collecting 18 grand a week. Pretty dismal really.

Have to agree. One of the papers worked out how much dosh he had earned per minute played and it was ridiculous.
Could have been a player for us had an amazing 6 months then the whole squash ball to the eye incident runied it.

For Liverpool id say:

Gary McAllister
Sami Hyppia
Stig Inge Bjornebye
and of course Ian Rush :PDT_Xtremez_28:

To name but a few

How much did Leeds sell Cantona to The Scum for?

Éric Daniel Pierre Cantona (born 24 May 1966 in Paris raised in Marseille) is a French former footballer of the late 1980s and 1990s. He ended his professional footballing career at Manchester United where he won four Premiership titles in five years, including two League and FA Cup "doubles". Cantona is often regarded as having played a major talismanic role in the revival of Manchester United as a footballing powerhouse and he enjoys iconic status at the club. In 2001 he was voted their player of the century, and to this day United fans refer to him as "Eric the King".

He however left Leeds before the end of the 1992-93 season, which saw them finishing 17th out of 22 in the newly formed Premier League, moving to Manchester United in November 1992 for the relatively small fee of £1.2 million, much to the disgust of the Leeds fans, although Howard Wilkinson, the Leeds United manager, was eager for him to leave

A real deal fnuking steal

Kevin Phillips at £650K from Watford was a snip. Not a bad deal for a guy who won the golden boot two years later in his debut season in the Premiership.

Shame we didnt sell him to Spurs for £15m when they wanted him in 2002.

Interesting to see you included Ally McCoist in your list Tommo. We adored him at Sunderland when he was with us, but in the cold light of day he was utter utter garbage for us.

Even so, it was widely touted that on our return to the top flight in 1999, Super Ally would be re-joining us from Rangers. Sadly that never happened and us Mackems were left with a taste of what might have been. Life's not fair - We give you McCoist. You gave us Flo!!!!

Still, Quinny & Supakev weren't a bad pair up front.

Aye, maybe you're right. Fantastic striker, but probably a poor signing overall.
