Simple question - can I wear my (suitably polished) brass beret badge? Or must it be the issued staybrite one?

Me? I'm a new (6 month or so) auxiliary pleb.

Cheers.

You can wear your brass one, many personnel do. As long as it has the Queen's crown on.
But you've only been in 6 months. You're a magpie!!! (anything bright and shiney). We have people like you in the Police, they're called PCSOs!!!

If you want to look a tw@t and have the time to keep it polished, ignore the digs and go for it

Well I went out and bought some brasso, so I needed something to polish with it, you see.

Off Topic you know I thought I saw a PCSO about to do some work the other day, there was a mouldy old transit clanking and belching out black clouds, but the PCSO was just crossing the road - straight through the cloud of dirt. Haha, well done.

A long time ago, in an Air Force almost lost in the mists of time, when "staybright" badges & buttons were options to be purchased, not issued, a very useful piece of advice was passed to me by an 'old sweat'.
Take a piece of wet & dry and smooth out all the 'nobbly bits' on the hat badge. Carefully buff up the badge so it becomes smooth.

It takes about 5 seconds to clean it afterwards.

If someone wants to wear a brass cap badge thats down to him, however I stopped one young SAC last year cause he was wearing a brass King's crown cap badge. He didn't have a clue, said he brought it off Ebay and didn't know there was a difference. Laughed my t1ts off. I hope he payed alot for it.

I used to use the underside of my issue bed mat, a dod of brasso and a quick rub on the rough matting backing, shiny in seconds!!!!
