This question goes to the nice Shiny folk from PSF or anyone as a matter of fact..

If I was to get posted can I keep my family in the same Family Quarter and travel back when I get time off.

I ask this because they are all happily settled in the area, doing well at school and the wife has a bloody good job.

It would save on disturbance and would not be detrimental to the family environment.

Has there been any precidences before now.

I believe it's more a DE question that a shiney one. It depends how badly people want the MQ you occupy.

As the mad mutt said, it would be the decision of DE (surprised he didnt charge a fiver for the info!). Speak to your DE HIC (Housing Information Centre) I can't remember what the procedure is but they will obviously advise you. It can be and has been done but there are various factors to take in to account one being do they have enough quarters.

Funnily enough, I was discussing this with our DE rep the other day. According to her, even if were posted to another unit within 50 miles and therefore commutable the regional office would almost certainly insist that I move.

That said, each case is judged on its merits. If you can display that the cost of moving you would be more than the cost of separation allowances over a normal tour length and SFA is not hard to come by at your unit you may get lucky.

If you're kids have special educational needs and the area you are posted to doesn't have the provision, you can ask for special treatment. I think its weighed against the demand for FQ though.

One thing you should be aware of, if you do go separately. You will be classed as voluntarily separated (VOLSEP) and as such will not be entitled to GYH(T), only LSA level 1. You should checkout JSP752 05.0118 a. <- bad gen

My last place had some Navy people living there whilst they commuted from Portsmouth to St Mawgan at the weekends.
Also people lived in quarters at St Mawgan and commuted to Plymouth each day.

???? Methinks you should perhaps read that again.

Keeping the quarter

Keeping the quarter

As has been mentioned, a lot will depend on the attitude of DE. I was in a similar position a couple of years ago; tried to to use the wife settled, kids doing well tack. Basically got told to eff off and move. The good Lady may be on a six figure salary with certain bonuses of half a million every week and DE will not give a wet slap. (Mind you why would you a) be in a quarter and b) be in????HOWEVER!Back in the real world. If one of your offspring is in secondary/upper/high school or has special needs you will have a better chance of not having to upsticks the whole family. I have used the Childrens Education Advisory Service (CEAS) a couple of times for advice or guidance and they are without doubt brilliant. They may even offer to help you word the letter to DE to maximise your chance of retention.
Sorry if a bit long winded but hope it helps

Having a child in their GCSE years or even SATS year also gives you a better chance of retaining a MQ.

If all else fails and you really want to remain in the area, you could always take advantage of the plummeting property prices.

Thanks for the info guys, it does'nt sound hopeful but I hope it wont happen anytime soon. I am just keeping options open and yous gave me something to go on with incase.

Would a nice MOD close this thread.

I had same problem 7 months go posted to a new unit only 35 miles from quarter. I requested to keep quarter told by DE to move. Due to education and other things I really wanted to keep quarter. Spoke to Ssafa rep and they sorted everything. I am still in that quarter and have to reapply every 12 months. But Ssafa rep has said that we just need to contact her for it to be reapplied.
Hope this helps
