Can you transfer jobs in the RAF?

Is the job you apply for the job you have to spend your whole career doing? or can you go in the raf in one trade and then after 4 years (or whatever) apply to do something else? For example go in as firefighter, then after a few years apply for police when that job is receiving applications?

Generally speaking no, however very occasionally there may be a chance due to service need.

If you're thinking about a career in the service, then yes you need to be aware that whichever trade you choose, you must be happy that that is the role that you want to do for the rest of your career. People generally only get to change trade, or remuster as it is known, should they fail their professional training.

There are exceptions, but only on a case by case basis, and not for the reason that you fancy a change of role.

The facts

The facts

For some reason RAF Police tends to be over subscribed, Fire Fighter tends never to find enough suitable people there remustering from the latter to the former is pretty unlikely.

Remustering in the RAF rarely happens for personal reasons

has anyone known someone to be able to remuster from a firefighter to wsop? I realise that wsop is closed at the moment but, was wondering that when it did open, if they would they rather take from civvie street rather, than from already employed personnel.

Bobby,

Anyone from any trade can apply for WSOp when there are vacancies but competition is quite strong. I know of several WSOps that joined as techies, mt drivers etc. Yes there is an upper age limit that varies from time to time. I think it's 29 yrs at the moment. Your local AFCO is your best port of call as they will have the latest info.

The upper age limit is 34 at the minute mate. The RAF dont consider re-mustering from say RAFP to Supplier the same as applying for either Officer or Aircrew (NCA). If you join up as one trade then wish to 'better' yourself to Officer or NCA then you will have to go through the whole application again while serving. So go to AFCO for your interview and through OASC at Cranwell. It's not the same as re-mustering. Good luck with whatever you decide.

For a serving airman the upper age limit is 37, so you have to have started your 10 week leadership training package at Cranwell BEFORE your 37th birthday.
