Does anyone know the history behind the pair of antique cannon at Camp Souter? Anything to do with our previous forays into this part of the world?

Am intrigued to know and would welcome any info that may shed some light. I asked around there but no-one seemed to know. I'm not an artillery spotter or anything, just curious ...

Camp Souter named after Captain Thomas Alexander Souter, only survivor of the battle of Gandamack, fought in 1842 when afgan forces anihalated the occupying british and indian army. Known as The Massacre of Elphinstone's Army. In the Autumn of 1842 an "Army of Retribution" led by Sir George Pollock, levelled Kabul.

I imagine they are something to do with that.

Not far from you (if you are currently there) on top of one of the mountains surronding you is what remains of the old forts/outposts from that time. I was lead to believe that they are from the 1842,s garrison. Were recovered and made to look good.

I have been up to some of the old hill forts around Kabul a few years ago. Found a couple of old cannon barrels with a royal cypher on just laying on the ground. Seems, talking to locals, that there is loads of that sort of thing about. Got some photos somewhere......:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Thanks for the gen gents, I have a little knowledge of the Anglo-Afghan wars but not much. I didn't know about the name connection. Cheers!

Not much you need to know about the Wars, we went, got our bottoms handed to us on a plate, tried leaving........gotour bottoms handed to us on a plate. If you are at Kabul take a look over at the block of flats/swimming pool area. Thats where the Russkies used to live and chuck Afghans of the roofs/diving boards...aparently.
