Quick question for the Movers out there, what are the rules for carrying weapons onto civvi flights? The trooper from Germany is ran by Air Berlin and I need to travel back to the UK a SA80 and pistol. I know that normally you arn't allowed to transit with weapons unless it's on mil air but are troopers ran by civvi airliners classed as Mil Air?

Where do you work?

No, no **** take. I don't mean physically walking onto the flight with them, just unsure wether they can be checked in as hold luggage or will the armoury have to get then sent for me to pick up in UK. The armoury here arnt sure as they have never come across the situation before.

It is neither unheard of nor irregular. I used to work at Aberdeen Airport for an airline and throughout the hunting months there was a never endling flow of people travelling with weapons into Albion with the express purpose of relieveing scottish fauna of its pulse. It's the bullets that were prohibited.

The Germans being the Germans, they are similarly and historically disposed to going places with guns with broadly speaking the same purpose (though with mixed results), and if you check with either Air berlin or the grunts at the airhead (DUS?), they will advise.

I remember somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind that the weapons have to be dismantled into the component parts in the baggage.

The trooper is classed as a military flight. Make sure your clerk let's the booking office know you are travelling with a weapon.

When you get to Birmingham you will collect and sign for your weapon from the RAF rep who meets your flight, they won't put them on the carousel.

Be prepared to hang about as weapons generally come off last. Just don't unwrap it and start wandering about the airport as a lovely army officer did at heathrow.

Thanks Woody. I've been trying to get hold of the RAF unit at Hannover all day but they must be out enjoying the sun.

If you can't get them try the Civilian Airhead Detachment at Northolt, they will be the guys meeting the flight at Birmingham. The guys at Hannover are a nightmare to get hold of at the mbest of times, Northolt may be easier the office is manned 8-5.

I used to work in an armoury and we regularly packed weapons for flights on civ air, only thing they get a ****ty on about is susats coz its radio active (they don't care how little the radioactivity is)
