I was having a chat with an old mucker and we ended up discussing where we'd been etc. and the conversation came around to what units we wanted when we passed out of initial trade training, and why.

How did we get on the subject? I was posted to Shawbury after my Fitters course and one of the lads I worked with there didn't seem very happy, so 'uncle' exerk asked him where he was from (thinking he might be a bit homesick), the answer? Wem! The next bloody village/town. "So why did you join the Air Force?" says I, "Cos I couldn't get a job" was the reply. It seems Shrewsbury was just too far out of the village for him.

So to end this ramble, and start the thread proper:

1. Coltishall
2. Honington
3. Wattisham

Why? 3 different A/C types (Jag, Bucc and Tomb) and if I didn't get any I thought there was a good chance of Marham (Victors), Coningsby (Tomb's) or Binbrook (Frightening's). In the end I got Coningsby.

Getting maudlin in me old age, sorry :PDT_Xtremez_21:

This isn't just for techies by the way, I'd be interested to find out what made the scribblies etc. mouths water - other than a BIC Mk.II (lol)

IIRC I asked for Chivenor, Lyneham and Brize for no particular reason at all other than being from oop North I fancied a change of scene...

The b*stards sent me to St Mawgan where I had to endure endless drinking accompanied by guilfree sex with a string of ugly but game women...I was geographically trapped in one of the best areas for rugby I've ever played in and the cricket leagues were the only ones I've played in where I put weight on due to the pasties and cream teas washed down with cider every Saturday...

Thanks for nothing PMC...:PDT_Xtremez_19:

I asked for anywhere away from the south, didn't really care where, but I was from the Isle of Wight and, much the same as Vim, wanted a change of scenery. Got a bo**ocking for putting "anywhere" on my dreamsheet, so I put in Scotland, Wittering and Leeming. First tour was at Brize:PDT_Xtremez_08: Not a bad camp but not really where I asked.

Heard all about them too Vim!! :PDT_Xtremez_31:

I was dead lucky. I asked for Scotland on my first and got Lossie, 600 miles away from the dreariest sh1thole in the Sarf, Crawley. Fugging ace it was too!
Then the barstewards sent me to Colt, so Crawley was relegated from the armpit of the UK.
Still learnt a thing or two about pigs whilst I was there, so it wasn't all bad. (Seriously, what is Norfolk For? B*ggered if I know why anyone would want to go on holiday there, it's absolutely sh1t).

Off Topic The source of your information is still the crowned prince of making only the very ugliest birds just a little bit happier...some of his conquests often made me physically wretch...and I had to talk to them in the morning as they gorged themselves on our meagre rations before he could get rid...Off Topic

Mechs I asked for
1. Odiham
2. Wittering
3. Coltishall

I ended up at Odiham, which was nice, as I could get the bus home if I wanted too.

Fitters I asked for
1. Wittering
2. Odiham
3. Marham

I went to Marham, which was better than the rest of me FT course who ended up at Sealand. I didn't want to stay there for the length of time I did mind.

I asked for Coningsby, Biggin Hill and Manston because I really wanted to go Coningsby and there were not many plumber LAC posts at Manston or Biggin Hill but hundreds at Coningsby.

Got coningsby too. Also got Wattisham as first choice coming back from Germany and Con again as last tour first choice.

Bet you asked for Biggin Hill so you could get on the Spitfire OEU:PDT_Xtremez_17:

As much respect as I have for the elderly, some things just can't be resisted :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I've met him and can confirm he is very very old...he probably did his traing using a wood saw and some glue whilst wearing those putties that go right up to the knee...:PDT_Xtremez_17:

Asked for :

1) Laarbruch
2) Bruggen
3) Coltishall

Reasons for the 1st 2 are obvious, Colt was because I'm a self confessed spotter and ex spacey, and I liked the Jag and the camp itself.

I was lucky, I got my first choice.

(In case anyone wonders, Police were allowed to go to Germany as a first tour because of the requirement for hundreds of "Rock Cop" cannon fodder in the SD814 role).

Not sure if any other trades had waivers like that....

On completing my 3 year finishing school course at Halton I asked for:

1. St Mawgan
2. Brawdy (was a long time a go)
3. Valley

Why you ask? 'cause I didn't know any better. Where did I end up?

Lossiemouth (yes, my negative choice was Scotland). Funny though 'cause I never regretted it and it was the best tour of my career and yes I am back there for my last tour too.

In the dark days of when trade training was at Hereford I can remember that I couldn't give a toss where I was posted to. I do remember though that I liked the picture of the radar radomes on the station booklet for Oakhangar. So I put that down and was duly posted to Odi. Great times and don't regret a second. I played football at the hangar soon after and decided PMA did me a favour (for a change).

As with DNR I did Trade Training in days of old when Knights were bold at Hereford............ ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Crystal Rooms. Asked for Coningsby, Lyneham or Odiham no particular reason for these choices. Was gobsmacked when told I was off to Stafford. "Join the Air Force, see the world." ............ get posted 16 miles away from Stoke on Trent where I grew up and joined up to get out of......DOH

I asked for Odiham, Benson or failing that NOT toncas, NOT Marham. I don't even need to finish this story, do I?

When I finished my mechs course at Halton, I asked for RAF East Anglia, as I was sha...... erm........."seeing" a girl who was a nurse at RAF Hosp. Ely.
Where did I get...........Lossie.
PMA do have a sense of humour.

I think PMA must be a shineys last tour posting, just so they can get their own back on everyone.

After 3 glorious years @ Halton I asked for:

Kinloss. Our mid-course visit was there and it looked great. I was probably biased because transit was full and we stayed in the Crown and Anchor (beer goggles work on places as well as women).

Northolt. Just a short hop from the Hammersmith Odeon and the rest of London for the gigs.

St Mawgan. I was single when I filled out the sheet.

Typically, just after putting my dream sheet in I met a girl from Wendover (who I later married) so they obviously sent me to Kinloss!! And the b@stards put me in the NMSU (nobody mentioned that place on our visit, I don't think the beer goggles would have been strong enough).

Looking at the posts so far very few people seem to get any of thier choices...or in fact even the preferred country...

It's exactly this that makes me not trust or believe anything that PMC ever says until it actually happens...
