Right then, went away on holiday at Xmas 2008 to Florida for 10 days in a private villa - the family & I did the whole Disney /Universal/SeaWorld thing and had a great time. Moreover, we managed to get the villa cheap and flights were under £500 per adult return so, for a trip to Florida at least it was relatively good value.

Fast forward 12 months and talk is rife in the TeaBarMech household of a repeat at xmas this year. Great I thought, until that is we looked at the escalating cost of it all - direct flights with BA/Virgin return are now around £800 per adult return, the villa cost has upped by around 50% and to add insult to injury I'll be stumping up for TeaBarMech baby number 2 this time round aswell.

This has left me considering other options for a possible family holiday at xmas - I'm open to any ideas, cold places, hot places, busy or quiet, basically anything anyone has done themselves and would recommend over the festive period.

Any good gen greatly appreciated
 
Myself and her indoors once went camping in the forest of dean in september. It was cold AND quiet. I reckon it could only be slightly more extreme in december!
 
go to holidayrentals.co.uk and you'll find some real treats, why not try the far east, flights for around £500, accommodation reasonable and living cheap.
 
Me and Mrs Gem went the Egypt, Sharm All Inclusive for 11 days for 1K for both of us on New Year's Day. Grand hotel, grand weather we had a great time. Plenty to do for the kids if you have them and good night life too if you wanted it.

try cyprus whent this year for xmas/new year.shorts&t-shirts during the day wall to wall sunshine in the 70s.nightime cooler,wife might need a cardi. all in all id do it again.
 
Or for something different you could look at the Landmark Trust, I've hired out a place called Fort Clonque on Alderney for a week this year, its a massive fort that sleeps 13 and has all the German gun positions from the war.:PDT_Xtremez_30:

But they have lots of other places around the country and the British Isles. It can be a bit expensive, but the place I have booked was £930 for a week but there is 7 of us going all chipping in a bit, and its in half term.
