What are people's thoughts on this one:

Background:

I'm mid-course of Distance Learning and have to attend a 5 day residential at the University. I have used an ELC to part fund the course and therefore had to have it signed off by Boss, education centre and show it will benefit service as well as myself.

Question:

Can i treat this as if i were going on a service course? ie hire car/service transport to and from the course? Service accommodation or hotel if non-availability? Subsistence etc?

5 nights at a Uni? Woo hoo!!!

If it's an OU summer school then there are rules covering this, or there used to be.

Any misunderstandings above caused by predictive texf

The JSP has a section on this. I'm away on a course myself so cant give you the reference.

All you can claim for is your travel, subsistence is not allowed. The JSP mentions that mileage can be claimed for self funded courses...exceptionally if authorised by the CO! The reality, at least on my unit, is that if it is authorised by the UIN budget holder you are claiming against, it is allowed. I'm not sure if you're allowed hire car as well as fuel...my internal Sun-Test-ometer thinks this is taking the **** a bit...but there's no harm in asking I guess.

^^

This.

I've recently finished a ELC-funded degree which involved attendance at lectures once a month at another military base. I was allowed to claim MMA for all lectures and also for attending graduation.

There was something about a 300 mile cap on MMA for attendance at lectures, but as it was a 90 mile round trip once a month, I didnt really pay much attention to it.

OK, happy with travel arrangements, what about accommodation?

There is a unit nearby which i will try first, but if there isn't any accommodation i take it i need to fund a travelodge for the week?!

Like I said, subsistence claims for self-funded courses are explicitly prohibited...you'll be paying your own I'm afraid.

Be careful. I'm overseas and having been told I can claim mileage for tutorials, have been advised I can now only claim 100 miles each way. The journey is 375 miles each way which I cannot afford every 6 weeks. Can I get a refund on my course because I can't afford to go - can I heck. Do my results suffer because I can't get to the tutorials - of course. Does anyone who can make a difference give a toss - NOPE! Remember, the RAF Values its people and supports education - as long as it doesn't cost any of their time or money! Check, check and double check the rules in the JSP - don't take anyone's word for it because it may bite you on the backside when you discover they have no chuffing idea what they are talking about! Rant over!
