I'm on a course at Mod Stafford from the 3-18th dec and trying to work out if I can claim the £25 odd for food subsistence. The hotel is 5.2 miles away from the camp however the camp has pay as you dine messing and after reading jsp752 I'm still confused.

It states that daily subsistence is re-inbursement for "expenditure incurred for food and drink during the day for periods of over 5 hours absence from the permanent or temporary assignment station, when neither a core meal in a payd unit or an entitled casual meal in a non-payd unit can be purchased". It then says that if the mileage is under 5 miles a co can authorise ds if its impractical to return to duty station.

If anyone can clear this up for my that would be great.

I would suggest that you'll prolly have to go for the PAYD option....but I can't put that in black and white.

No doubt some yes man will be along to question why you would even want to claim DS when we all have a duty to save the MoD pennies, blah blah blah...

Not sure where it's stated but if there's a service establishment with messing facilities within 10 miles of your hotel then you eat there xxx

Off TopicBut that's a quality comment and ever more prevalent nowadays.

I did a course there this year and my travel cell limited my DS to travel there and travel back. The rest of the time I was supposed to drive to the mess. It wasn't too bad but it did sort of wreck the team spirit I've had on other courses as the singles I was on the course with could afford to eat at restaurants every night but I just couldn't.

Lets hope there is a Subway/Tesco/Chip-Shop on the way which will be about the same price/less than the price of the mess.

Half Chips-Half Fried Rice with Curry Sauce.....Yummy..

There was a co-op that did a meal deal for around three quid across the road from the hotel. I used to jump in there on the way to work. The mess is on a completely different site to the cryo site.

I take it the hotel is B&B?
Lunch is at the Unit, there is no reason to leave if there are facilities on base.
Evening Meal should be taken at the duty unit unless you work beyond the times the core meal is offered.

To be absolutely honest, from the information you provide, there is no justification for you to eat elsewhere but the Unit.
