I have recently returned from det and have a question to pose regarding claims. The det was accommodated in a hotel and breakfast and tea was provided. A packed lunch was also provided by the hotel during the day. Whilst this was all adequate at no time during the working day was a hot drink provided, nor was there any provisions to make one. Now this may seem a bit petty but if you have a coffee addiction like me a small fortune was spent feeding the habit, especially when purchased from a local establishment. I would be grateful for your advice, many thanks.

My advice would be, next time take a flask. Fill it in the morning at the hotel and happy days.... Free Java! Alternatively you could have spoken to the Det Admin bod (purse string holder) and requested the purchase of a kettle. Just out of curiousity was this a Red Det?

I think I have been in long enough to pack a flask---------------------I also doubt any flask would last 12 - 15 hours I was working. No it was not a Red det and the there was only a fleeting visit from an Army admin bod.

Hmm you might be onto a losing here, as far as I'm aware your caffeine addiction is not supposed to be supported by the mod just as a smokers nicotine addiction wouldn't be, as someone else said maybe a flask or even a kettle should be on the packing list next time

Is this a joke?

When you are back at your parent Unit in the UK do you get free coffee? I don't drink 'brews' but quite like pop - should I get free fizzy drinks while I am on Det then? Seriously, coffee is a lifestyle choice, if you have chosen to buy this commodity while you are away then live with it don't just expect the tax payers to pick up your tab.

Honestly, am I missing something here?

The guy asked what he thought was a genuine question. Based on your theory Sid, why do they put brew making stuff in rat packs?

This should have been addressed with the DAO in theatre. The Op Order should have stated what entitlements there were to hot/cold drinks to be purchased from the imprest, and if it wasn't included, then the DAO would have had reachback support to HQ Air who would have made the call. I know from my times as DAO it has been clearly laid down as to whether bottled water is to be purchased from the Imprest. I've never provided hot drinks, but then again my dets as DAO have generally been to warm places in warm weather.

Cannot see you getting anything for this, no recipt no money. Was this not brought up at the Admin brief on day one or on the wash up at Endex. Obviously your still alive and not suffering from the lack of beverage available. Bad planning methinks.

Once again this thread shows what a poor place this forum has become. Somebody wanted genuine advice because they cannot get an answer at unit level and they are pilloried for it.

For my take, if the meals were being provided then it is not unreasonable to expect a drink too. If there was no drink in with your lunch meal then you should be entitled to claim for something, possibly not all you drank but up to a sensible limit.

Personally, after 24 years of not claiming all I am entitled to, I would be asking for everything I can get.

Now before the outrage bus pulls up and all the Daily Wail readers (and there are plenty on here or nobody would be able to quote their stories) get off I am not condoning a carte blanche approach to allowances, merely that people claim what they are ENTITLED to.
