ORGANISATIONS joined forces with the local community to remove scrub on Dartmoor’s old Harrowbeer Airfield as part of the long-term restoration of the site. Work has been ongoing for the past two years to combat the damage caused by over-growing vegetation. Among the groups involved in removing gorse and scrub from the dispersal pens were the Harrowbeer Interest Group, Tavistock Taskforce, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, police officers and staff and members from Dartmoor National Park Authority. The whole site was also litter-picked making a safer and more pleasant environment. Operational between 1941 and 1949 RAF Harrowbeer played host to a variety of aircraft including Hurricanes, Spitfires, Typhoons and Bristol Blenheims. Today the dispersal pens are the most prominent remains and would have offered blast protection for two fighter aircraft and their air crew together with an air-raid shelter for up to 25 persons. Continuing work on this site has been planned for the next two to three years to help uncover and maintain historical features associated with the airfield and the men and women who were stationed there. Anyone interested in volunteering for the project can contact Peter Dell at Tavistock Taskforce on 01822 610071.
