Hi Guys,

I will soon be attending a week long course in the UK and I wondered what I would be entitled to.

I fly in to Heathrow and need to be at the SGT's Mess on the Sunday night ready for doors Monday morning. Course finishes Friday and I fly back out on Saturday.

I am married and live in a MQ overseas.

The Mess I am going to is not pay as you dine, but I understand I need to purchase meal tickets.

I ask as I have been given entirely differant gen on two previous courses.

If meals arn't provided, in this case do I still have to use the Mess or can I claim my UK DS and eat elsewhere, ie Spar shop, cafe, bar etc.

Secondly would I also be able to claim LSSA as I will be away 6 nights / 7 days?

Thanks in advance for any informative replies.

No LSSA thats for 10 days or more
Mess you will pay room only and eat where you like.
As far as rates your entitled to nothing if your at a service establishment is my understanding of the system now not even incedentals.
However your ever helpful HR people should be able to tell you more.

I take it you have read the relevent JSP, but here's my slant:

Day Subsistence: You will be entitled to DS for the period when you are travelling to the airhead in your current country and also when you are travelling to whatever unit (you didnt say) you are doing the course. DS is now capped at £25 per day. You will also be able to claim this on the way back. Keep your receipts!

Accommodation: As you are SFQ, no accom charges will be levvied.

Food: Technically, your temporary unit's Mess should arrive you into Single Living Accommodation, which would automatically generate food charges. When you return to your PU, your admin staff should remove this SLA "Marker", otherwise you'll carry on paying food. In reality though, many messes are bone idle and just tell the people to pay for what you eat. Make sure you confirm which they are going to do, because you may end up paying for the food twice!

LOA: You will retain your normal rate of LOA as the course is so short.

LSA: No entitlement as the course is so short.

IE: A thing of the past - no entitlement.

Mess Fees: Remember to "Warn Out" of your current mess so that charges are stopped and "Warn In" on your return. You should only ever have to pay mess fees at the mess you are at.

You cannot claim Day Subsistance given that you're being accommodated in the SNCOs and WO Mess were you are able to purchase a Non-PAYD casual meal.

My question is then why do I have to eat in the Mess if food is not provided. if I have to purchase it, then why can I not purchase it from elsewhere.

This is not meant to come across as a flippant remark, I just require a sensible answer as I have been given differant answers to entitlements previously.

Many thanks.

You can eat wherever you want mate; you just can't claim DS. Unless the criteria in JSP 752 are met; and as you're staying in the mess, they're not.
