For some strange reason I've been listening to loads of covers at the minute and was just wondering if anyone has heard any that they truly believe surpass the brilliance of the original. We all know that many songs have been brutally destroyed by some covers.

Anyway the one that sticks out most for me has to be Johnny Cash's cover of One. Originally by U2.

Something about his voice that just brings a higher level of feeling to the song.

Came across it whilst trying to find Johnny Cash's cover of First Time Ever I Saw Your Face from the new Sky Movies advert.

Ok i'll add a few obvious ones which imediately spring to mind.

Nirvana covering Bowies "The Man Who Sold The World"
Jeff Buckley covering Leonard Cohens "Halleluyah"
Clash covering "I fought The Law"

I'll add a few later when I have a bit more time to think

Alien Ant Farm's version of "Smooth Criminal" knocks spots off of the original. Also, remember Goldfrapp doing a version of the Ordinary Boys' "Boys Will Be Boys" on Radio 1's Live Lounge a while back, giving it a 1920's Cabaret-esque sound to it. Much, much better than the original.

Manic's did a cover of umbrella? I know Biffy Clyro have on the live lounge. Which I will add is millions of times better than the original. But to be fair the original is rubbish.

Order is: Song - Cover Artist. Original Artist

Hurt - Johhny Cash. Nine Inch Nails.

Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash. Depeche Mode

Hounds of Love - Futureheads. Kate Bush

All Along the Watchtower - Hendrix (although any version beats Dylan's whining).

Am I Evil - Metallica. Diamond Head

Turn the Page - Metallica. Bob Seger

Knocking on Heaven's Door - Clapton. Dylan

Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters (waits for abuse by Floyd fans).

Easy - Faith No More. Commodores.

It Must be Love - Madness. Labi Siffre

Faith - Limp Bizkit. George Michael.

Feeling Good - Muse. Nina Simone (I think)

Mrs Robinson - Lemonheads. Simon and Garfunkel

Physical - Nine Inch Nails. Adam and the Ants

Frontin' - Jamie Cullum. No idea who did the original maybe Jay Z?

Tainted Love - Marylin Manson. Soft Cell (who, according to the Internet, covered Gloria Jones)

That Tears For Fears song covered for the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

And some I didn't even know were covers until I looked on the net:raf:

Hey Joe - Hendrix. The Leaves

The House of The Rising Sun - The Animals. Georgia Turner

I Fought the Law - The Clash. The Crickets

Remember - Aerosmith. The Shangri-Las

Also, not better but definitely noteworthy:

Bohemian Rhapsody (Polka Version) - Weird Al Yankovitch. Queen

Stairway to Heaven - Rolf Harris. Led Zep

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - William Shatner. Beatles

Far Corporations cover of Stairway to Heaven.

Beats that self indulgent screeching of Lead Zep into a cocked hat.

Will now stand by for incoming.

Embrace covered D12's "How Come" for Radio 1's Live Lounge and their version later appeared on the Live Lounge Album.
IMHO it is fcukin brilliant, sends shivers down my spine each time I hear it.

Disturbed's Land of Confusion is mucho better than the original methinks:

You've obviously just said that for a reaction, cos I'd never heard such a load of sh!te in my life when that cover was released. Come to think of it, they were probably just trying to get a reaction by releasing it.

For me:

Live and let die - G n R

All along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (although Dylan did start playing it in a Hendrix stylee later on.

Helter Skelter - Motley Crue

And I agree with "Sympathy for the devil"

Crosby,Stills & Nash did a better version of Wodstock than the original
Ozzie Osbourne's version of Purple Haze is ACE.

Jo Whiley's Live Lounge throws up some interesting but not necessarily better covers at times. Good to see artists taking a risk and getting out of their comfort zones. Particular favorites of mine:

30 Seconds to Mars - Stronger (Kanye West/Daft Punk)
Jamie Cullum - Frontin' (Farrell Williams) this was the one that really started it all!

Don't forget Urge Overkill - Girl, you'll be a woman soon - from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, originally a Neil Diamond song.

Nice thread - easy answers for me!

The Clash - I Fought The Law
Stiff Little Fingers - Johnny Was
Futureheads - Hounds Of Love
Elvis Costello - (Whats So Funny) 'Bout Peace Love And Understanding

and THE greatest cover version ........

The Stranglers - Walk On By

I`d go for - Are friends electric? by the replicants (Originally Tubeway Army) and
Wicked Game by HIM originally Chris Isaac.
Has to be said though both originals were awesome.
Oh yeah and Disturbed doing Tears for Fears `Shout` but really Shouting!!
