CP4 Colour Blindness

Hi All,

I'm CP4, and the only job I've been told I can do is Supplier and 'Crappy Admin Jobs' (In the words of my recruiter)

Would any current recruiters be able to shed some light on the specific jobs available to me at all?

Many thanks.

I am CP4 and am a supplier and have been for the last 22 years. There are limitations on certain jobs as when operating aroung the Airfield lights are different colours and imagine the consequences of not obeying them. Aircraft trades will also be out as you don't want to be linking green wires to red wires and such.

That said all jobs are important and are not "crappy". I take it the recuiter is biased toward certain trades. Do not let that put you off, as I said I am a supplier and have had a great time. I also know plenty of Admin people who would not change trade for all the tea in china. Your job is what you make it, I have had some lows and highs within my trade.

Make some more enquiries into trades which do accept CP4.

I don't know what the score is now but my colour perception was CP4 (safe) whatever that meant! I had to attend a specialist in London to assess my level of colour blindness. I think I was borderline, (pastel shades) and although I was told I couldn't have been a pilot (didn't have the qualifications anyway, but subsequently met a pilot with worse cp than me!!!) I spent 22 years as a sooty (Engines Technician) and I must have changed in that time hundreds of CSDU's IDG's and other components. Many required identifying wires and I didn't have problems with the colours at all, don't have problems with red/green traffic lights. None of the components I fitted were ever a problem owing to crossed wires, these days most cabling has identification on the sheathing. I still work in aerospace and still do some electrical work.

Footnote, what trade was the recruiter? and on the basis that what you have said is accurate and thet he did use the word "crappy" I would suggest you speak to someone else at the AFCO!

CP4 Jobs

When I was doing careers there were at least (from memory) 8 or 9 jobs that you could do as CP4. Obviously not knowing your AST score I can comment exactly on your case but I suggest that you get your AFCO to issue you ALL the relevant Trade Information Sheets for the trades that you can do with CP4

You can be a Medic. I remember chatting to one once who only ended up doing it because he was CP4.

AST results said I can do every single job, assuming I was to have the necessary quals - Eg. Driving License etc.

Being CP4 will not allow you to have an airfield driving permit, so whatever trade you do get into - you cannot be employed in any way as a driver on an airfield. Be it an MT driver, or techie chugging about in a cherry picker.

Hey don't knock those 'crappy admin jobs'. I'm a techie and love it but I do sometimes look enviously at the admin clerks, they earn the same money, don't really work shifts and have far more opportunities to travel. They also progress faster through the ranks.
