Cranwell to Become Centre of Everything Training (Just About)

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
Medics arent trained at Henlow Vim, they are all trained at Lichfield. Its the Medical aspects of Aircrew Training that goes on at CAM. A godforsaken place that I'm happy I will never have to return to. So glad we bought a house in Lincolnshire as I should be able to see the majority of my career out whilst still living in my own Gaff.

Centre of Aviation Medicine is moving to Cranwell, lock stock and barrel - all announced shortly after the Henlow closure announcement.

Moving P1 Training has been talked about since before I arrived at RTS as an instructor in 2008, and was announced formally a while ago.

Of course, who knows where the money will come from... Wasn't Cosfird moving to St Athan for years before someone pointed out it wasn't affordable...?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong (memory like a rusty colander), but wasn't St Athan declared to be the 'centre for all training' a few years back? Then it got dropped to 'centre of all training for a select number of TGs'...?

I can see the logic in dropping Halton, but I'm not sure Cranners has the capacity to keep doing what it's doing AND the addition of RTS / ACS? That's quite a staffing uplift, not to mention housing for the recruits.

Gonna be an absolute clusterfcuk marching all the rupert cadets and ground cadets about at the same time!

You are correct Witty, St Athan was chosen to be the training centre for engineering training of all varieties across the three services. It got binned because the plan was not viable; it would have cost a kings ransom and the consortium who would have provided the training could not answer certain key questions about how it was going to conduct its business. Even now there is another plan to move training from St Athan up to Cosford but it too appears to be in the balance because there is no money in the pot to effect the move.
This seems to be an ongoing issue where long term plans to save money fall by the wayside because there isn't enough of the stuff available right now.

Let's add into the mix that the station has serious issues with keeping the heating, lighting etc on with the generator's and boilers constantly crashing. It became quite a joke in Adastral Hall that returning to work after each bank holiday would find the building with no electricity, again. The infrastructure dates back to WW2 and needs massive expense to bring the place up to standard LONG before they try and shoehorn even more onto the base.

Has anyone thought, that MAYBE, just maybe, there'll be a combined P1 Training before long...

Why teach marching, general service knowledge, kit prep, IFPT etc at 3 (now 2 different sites? Those aspects are all the same, regardless of if you're going for a commission or not.

The Officer Recruits could then move on to Officer Training then P2, with the airmen moving onto P2 as now.

Makes a fair bit of sense if you look at it that way...

It does indeed - which is why it'll probably never happen.

Besides, how can the officers tell themselves they're better than mere groundbots and grunts if they're all doing Phase1 side by side? We'd all be able to see how utterly rubbish some of them are, and vice versa, and those at the top end of ground trade phase 1 would be gutted, being able to see and knowing that they are better than those struggling through officer phase 1, but will still be outranked and paid less.

Plus there's only one parade square, and you couldn't possibly have a flight full of shineys, stackers and what-not passing off on the same hallowed ground as their 'superiors', surely?...

Medics training from Henlow moving there so I'm guessing that includes all the aircrew chamber testing as well...then it seems recruit (Airmen) going there as well...

Maybe this time they might get the building dimensions right for the centrifuge........then again.......

Quite correct there is only 1 parade square at the College of Knowlege, outside OACTU No.1 Mess, the area outside CHOM is a parade ground.

There is also a little 'paradey' bit outside the East camp gym, mainly used by the bandsmen/ women and spaceys.

Also used by Airmen Aircrew in the past...not sure about today.
