I'm interviewing for this role next week. At 36, I've had varied and enjoyable working career so far, most recently co-founding a successful food business (which continues to grow), but nothing directly involving IT. I have always enjoyed tech & data though and want to make this my focus going forwards. Am I being realistic to think these three things could overlap in the RAF: (1) a fulfilling sense of service to the country (2) developing actual expertise in an area (3) being active / having an "adventurous" workplace? I'd be really grateful for any comments, particularly from anyone working this area already.

Getting in at the start of a new imagining of the trade. With your age, maturity and the life experience you have, you should be able to ride that wave pretty far mate. All the things you want to do are possible, it's all depending on your mindset and how to go about it.

Thanks pal, I really hoped someone would say that. Are you in that area yourself?

So I guess it's fruit and veg then (sorry, I'll get my coat)..
Whether you'll like being an IT tech in a modern RAF, I don't know but when you leave you will likely, like many of us ex RAF people, have served with pride.

I'm 35 and going for the same role.

From what I've dug up it can be quite a varied role; on one posting you could be manning the IT helpdesk or in another working on radar systems.

Advice I'd give for the interview; do your research on the RAF (including current ops), trade and all the training involved (both basic and trade).

Also helps if you're able to pass the fitness test, that's my issue at the moment.

I thought we tried that reimagining 16 years ago? :ROFLMAO:
