After some good gen for cheap car rental in Cyprus. Off on our hols for two weeks at the end of April. We're landing at Paphos and would ideally like to pick the car up from there.
Any ideas or contacts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers all

Have you thought of ringing MT at Akrotiri ? They should be able to recommend somebody decent.

Prices vary considerably, last time I was there I rented a Suzuki jeep for a week for the less than the price of one days rental with the bigger outfits. Don't rush into anything as a taxi isn't (or wasn't last time I was there) too expensive. I can just taste the brandy sours now!!:PDT_Xtremez_30:

Fcukin coincidence or what, saves me looking for his card. He's a top guy, he even came out and repaired a puncture that I picked up bondu bashin', gratis. Been using him since 1981.

They do have avis out there you know. Cheapest isn't always best.

After a tour out in Cyprus, you get to know how corrupt and dodgy the locals are (opinions may differ, depending on how corrupt you allow yourself to become).

Go with a reputable well known international company, even if it's just for sheer safety if nothing else.

When living out there, I recommended a local guy for my family to use when they came to visit [no names on public forum though, if you wan't to know who to avoid, pm me]. I took them down to the town, where he went through the rigmarole of car rental, charging £13cyp per day plus £5cyp perday for insurance.

When we took the car back, he just ripped up the application so he didn't have to send it away to the insurance company, so technically the car wasn't used for those 2 weeks according to the insurance. My Dad asked for the £5cyp per day back, seeing as they didn't actually insure the car (would have been fcuked if they'd have had an accident) he told him to get lost.

Dodgy feckers, only deal with ones that come HIGHLY recommended by MANY people, not just one single guy who's had one good experience with him.

A company I always use in Spain and the Canaries is Europcar, they are cheaper than the big boys and the cars are always decent. They operate in Cyprus too.

In my experience, if you don’t want to spend a lot in Cyprus you won’t get a lot – even with the known brands. They all have ‘beach’ cars that they’ll happily give you if you go for the cheapest option. If you want comfort and safety go for at least mid-range with one of the known brands, if you want adventure go cheap and accept that you get what you pay for.

One thing to note is that they will all try to give you a car full(ish) of petrol and get you to take it back empty. That way they can charge you for a full tank when you accept the car, and anything you leave in it when you bring it back is straight profit for them. You try and judge when a strange car in a strange land with air con on 100% is about to run out of motion lotion. They know you wont risk running out and missing your flight so they win every time. Don’t take it - ask for an ‘empty’ one that someone has just returned (you can get petrol 24/7) or insist that they let you bring it back full and don’t pay for the tank full.

Off out for a trip at the weekend WGAF I will ask around at Aki and get some info I also have a copy of the Cyprus Lion hanging around from my last trip 3 weeks ago so will have a look in there.
