I am aware of the two Nimrod groundcrew in Basrah being awarded the QCB a few years ago and the rock ape Flt Lt that received the MC in Afghanistan and it got me thinking. Other than the usual MBE and MSM awards, are there any other non comissioned or comissioned ground trades personel that have been decorated for there actions in the post war era.

My FS was a JT in the Falklands war and got a Mentioned in Despatches for some EOD work he did. I'm fairly sure that the other 2 involved got bravery medals, but as a JT all he got was the MiD.

I also recall that a few years ago, either a JENGO or SENGO was decorated for shutting down a Tonka in Goose Bay after the growbags pulled the bang handles after loosing it on a wet runway. I may be wrong as it is only a vague memory. :PDT_Xtremez_35:

I recall something along those lines too...And like you I can´t remember what he was awarded though.

I am sure that I was at Wittering with your now FS when he was a JT in '82,I remember the Flt Lt getting a Queens Gallantry medal.but can't remember what the SNCO got-it is a life time ago and I have slept since then!:PDT_Xtremez_14:

The eleven man EOD team from 5131 that went to the Falklands in 1982 were all decorated, the officer rightly got the QGM, two airman, your FS (who quite rightly was then a JT and who I worked with at lossie in later times) and another SAC got the Queens Commendation for Brave Conduct. The FS on the team got the MID you mentioned, the other 3 airman got British Task Force commanders commendations and the other 4 SNCO's all got commendations of some kind, AOC ! Gp etc. 5131 continues to get awards for gallantry, from the Balkans to Iraq, but doesn't sing its praises too loud.

There is also the WO fireman who was awarded the QCB in Afghanistan in 2002

Well firstly- John Saunders GM http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/l/lords_bridge_ffd/index2.shtml

As for the aforementioned incident with the WO (Now Flt Lt) Firefighter, I was there.

But what about the two lads awarded the QCB for their actions at the RAF Wittering RN Harrier T8 crash of 5 Dec 2002 that cheesegrated the pilot, as mentioned on the goat before. Once again I was there.

What about the third lad that moved beyond a security cordon at a highly suspiscous blaze in Northern Ireland in Nov 02, suspected widely at the time as being a terrorist trap! It was a RED area, which is never good, those who have served in NI wil know that!

He left the cordon, straight into the crowd, argued WITH the crowd, who backed down, forcing them back 200 metres. He then identified a known terrorist suspect and segregated him from the crowd, placing him personally under arrest, literally holding him there, until the soldiers were able to extend the security cordon against the hostile crowd and meet up with him, half an hour later. Throughout this time he had still directed the firefighting efforts towards a three story government building via radio and been stoned/bricked/paintbombed etc by the hostile community. Once again, I was there at the incident and recall it vividly.

He received a 'good show' award!

Not the first time it seems. Refer incident at Warton, date outside memory but within the last 12 years when a service pilot thought he had lost NWS on a Tonk. 2 banged out and the a/c almost collided with the Terminal/Radio Section buildings. Bloke from Warton Flight Test crawled over the radome, into the front office and hit the right switches. As a civvy there was no medal and, if memory serves, not even a pay rise.

I believe that fire crews are taught the shut down...no medals required!:PDT_Xtremez_09:
