Defence spending

  • Following weeks of work, the E-GOAT team are delighted to present to you a new look to the forums with plenty of new features. Take a look around and see what you think!
The head line says "UK military to get biggest spending boost in 30 years" but I suspect that while some of it will be new money, some will simply be just money shuffled around from other projects and platforms. Bye bye tanks??

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said "letting go" of older weapons would create "headroom to invest".... he also told BBC Radio 4's Today programme there would potentially be an increase in soldiers working in "electronic warfare, signals intelligence, long-range fires".

Yep. Another smoke and mirror exercise inevitably leading to manpower cuts and equipment deficiencies in all the wrong areas. Or is that just me being cynical for the sake of being cynical?

As a Consultant in the defence world I see the trough having a re-fill!

Depends what they are aiming to spend it on...Be great if equipment wasn't always the focus and perhaps some pay uplifts and upgrades to quarters etc could be achieved as well.

Obtaining shiny new high tech toys to show off on the evening news always trumps better blocks for the lads or quarter upgrades, said a local cynic.

Agree Vim. But unfortunately Manpower is now looked at as a dispensible resource!! So by making your service life even more uncomfortable you are less likely to want to stay in a quarter with a long-term contract. Complete mismatch in the last few years of what the independent services want and what the MOD wants. And the MOD always wins.

Not sure quite how attractive this is to be honest, but it does set up the ball for the removal (on paper) of 10 thousand soldiers to march back down the hill again - not sure how we sit.

Boris was on about ruling the waves again, at least in Europe, or some nonsense like that.
Mention of a T32 Frigate...not something I had heard before and my ear is to the ground on such things.

For the benefit of those who leave googling for others I found this article in Forbes (of all places) LINKY

Two things to be aware of:
1. it won't go on pay - it is destined for IT, space and AI. But, if it does go anywhere else
2. it will go to new Ships and possibly to EU Shipyards as we're still bound by EU Rules on military equipment purchasing!!!

Perhaps the Government should be prioritising reindustrialising the UK post 2020?

Yep...reskilling the workforce and developing job opportunities...and the UK public being prepared to pay a little more to fund decent wages and working conditions.

Jeez that is just a wall of text to me :)

The last round of redundancies, the payment was decent i believe, enough for people to take VR. The Hutton report recommended going to Government statutory redundancy payments - which is pants. Anyone able to decipher what this new policy actually means?

IIRC it was the 1st Tranche which allowed a few to walk out the door laughing all the way to the bank. After that for the 2nd & 3rd Tranches they tightened it all down didn't they?

Without reading it as I couldn't care less being out I reckon it'll be aimed at making it easy for short careers, maybe even dipping in and out to advance as a Civvy and Serving?

In respect of your first point...
Indeed it was.
Tranche 1 was an absolute gift for those who were:
1. Willing.
2. Qualified.
3. Suitably selected.
4. Young enough to take the skills to an outside, better paid position.
5. Brave enough to make the jump.
Thank you.
