Can anyone explain to me why in Defence Writing we use double spaces between sentences?

Is it a throw back to typewriter days?

All it does now is put stupid green squiggly lines everywhere! Can't we just go to single spaces?

I thought the squiggly green lines were there if the computer thought that your sentence didn't make sense.

It appears for grammatical errors and the likes of fragmenting your sentence. Or if you put one space too many in between sentences!

Ahh I see. I just ignore them anyway, if it sound alright in my head then that's good enough for me!! :)

To get rid of the wriggly, squiggly green ones, in Word just select:
  • Tools; Options; Spelling & Grammar.
  • In the Grammar tab (below "Writing Style)" select Settings.
  • You can then set the number of spaces between sentences to "2"...
As if by magic, the squiggly lines will vanish before your eyes!:PDT_Xtremez_42::PDT_Xtremez_42:

Well I never....!

I have taken years to finally realise that some people are really clever - others just read the instructions first!

I've always put 2 spaces between sentences because I took a business module in school 15 years ago( I was 16 and suddenly realised I would be the only boy, unfortunately boys learning to type didn't impress girls very much in my school, and I still can't do it very well) and I thought it was still the standard everywhere, not just Defence Writing.

But a rule that is thown out of the window when writing SJARS. Single space only after a full stop.

Er, you can get most word procesors to double-space the lines for you Mash, then it won't get picked up as grammatical errors.
And as to why, I think its to make pages of text less cluttered.

It is not a Defence Writing thing. It is an English Grammatical thing.

I think you're right mate, it's a grammatical thing, Full stops followed by 2 spaces before the start of a new sentance are now a thing of the past, I know when I went through school you had to leave 2 spaces before starting a new sentance but now my girlfriend says people go mad about it, the same as they do if you can't be bothered to write can not instead and instead use can't and will not and won't etc..

God i'm boring!!:PDT_Xtremez_34:

What a crap subject... You've turned me into a gayer!!!

Back in the days of the typewriter it was 3 spaces between sentences.
