Hi soulman. The hurdles that you face are, the RAF does not have any Orthodontists, so they would have to send you private, which costs a pretty penny. As far as I know, when you do get it done in the RAF, I think it stops you being deployed until your treatment is complete. As VM said earlier, lay it on thick at the Dentist, just how much its getting you down blah, blah. When you see the Orthodontist ask for the Damon System, as this is the quickest system on the market for tooth correction. (google it). Hope this helps.
Slightly incorrect there. Allow me to elaborate:
Being currently serving and with braces fitted, I'll share my experience with you.
The RAF
DOES have an orthodontist, mind you there is only 1 at the minute and he's based at the secret Yorkshire comms hub.
You
can deploy. Your treatment can be arranged to suit.
First port of call is your Stn Dental Centre who will assess your needs and make the necessary arrangements for you to be placed on the WAITING LIST if appropriate.
Be aware, I was on the waiting list for almost 3 years. You must also have sufficient length of service remaining to complete your treatment.
Once you reach the top of the list you will be called forward to see the orthodontist and have yet more asessments carried out (x-rays, photographs of your teeth, more impressions taken (possibly) & the basics of your treatment plan outlined) and then he will make his decision as to wether you will be treated or not.
If you are to be treatedyou will be given another appointment for the braces to be fitted.
There are different forms of treatment, mine involved having brackets cemented to my teeth and wires connected between them to make the adjustments.
You have to attend the clinic every 6-8 weeks for further adjustments.
The whole process can last from 18 mths to 3 yrs (on average).
I'm about 8 months into mine.
Points to note.
Be prepared for some severe discomfort as your teeth get pulled and pushed around by the braces. It's like having constant toothache at times.
Your ability to eat certain foods will be severely affected.
Apples, carrots and anything crunchy like that are basically out.
You'll get used to it and work out ways round it but it's a bit of a pain at first.
Cleaning your teeth properly will now take approx 20-30 mins.
The trips back and forth to the clinic can be a pain. I always book an early appointment and travel up the night before just to break up the 400 mile round trip! The transit accommodation (for JR's) is basic and don't expect to get a good signal on your mobile. FORGET about mobile broadband- it's in the biggest black hole for signal coverage ever!
Hope that helps. If you need any more gen, PM me.
