could anyone get tell me any info regarding getting braces in the air force.. really want to get my teeth straightened whilst im still quite young (18) .

any gen much appreciated :D

yeah i guessed that, im booking an appointment tomorrow.

i was just wondering if they were actually allowed.. ive heard rumours you cant get them

I've known 3 or 4 people with braces, one was aircrew so I don't even guess there would be any sort of job barring.

I fly with someone who wears a brace...he's had it on for over 2.5 years now...Just start blubbling when he asks you if having wonky teeth gets you down...You'll be setting off airport metal detectors before you know it.

Same here I know someone who had a brace fitted in the RAF, so it should be no problems getting one.
I broke a tooth years ago and had a big grey filling moulded onto the tooth, I went to the dentist a few years later and asked about getting it changed to a gold crown, and within a few weeks it was done, it did help that the dentist had PVR'd and didn't care about keeping costs down :PDT_Xtremez_30:

I currently work with a brace face metal mouth loser at the moment...so I guess they can sort you out cletus...

...and thanks for the help, yeah sometimes i try not to listen to many rumours however theres some which sound pretty real..

tried to start my own rumour a couple weeks back but it didnt take off..

anyway thanks for the info..

btw TG4 is getting a pay rise in april..

Please do not be put off having the work completed,i was 28 years ago and still regret it,remember if they d'ont take the mick for the iron work it will just be something else they find or is that all banned in these PC days!

Hi soulman. The hurdles that you face are, the RAF does not have any Orthodontists, so they would have to send you private, which costs a pretty penny. As far as I know, when you do get it done in the RAF, I think it stops you being deployed until your treatment is complete. As VM said earlier, lay it on thick at the Dentist, just how much its getting you down blah, blah. When you see the Orthodontist ask for the Damon System, as this is the quickest system on the market for tooth correction. (google it). Hope this helps.

Nice post but completely wrong. The one RAF Orthodontist who DOES supply braces works out of the Dental Centre at RAF Leeming. I'm pretty sure he's the only one and from what I heard from his patients during the time I was there he's pretty damn good.

That's a pity if he's left because his reputation was excellent, unlike his Army counterpart. Another small perk gone.

Slightly incorrect there. Allow me to elaborate:
Being currently serving and with braces fitted, I'll share my experience with you.

The RAF DOES have an orthodontist, mind you there is only 1 at the minute and he's based at the secret Yorkshire comms hub.

You can deploy. Your treatment can be arranged to suit.

First port of call is your Stn Dental Centre who will assess your needs and make the necessary arrangements for you to be placed on the WAITING LIST if appropriate.

Be aware, I was on the waiting list for almost 3 years. You must also have sufficient length of service remaining to complete your treatment.

Once you reach the top of the list you will be called forward to see the orthodontist and have yet more asessments carried out (x-rays, photographs of your teeth, more impressions taken (possibly) & the basics of your treatment plan outlined) and then he will make his decision as to wether you will be treated or not.

If you are to be treatedyou will be given another appointment for the braces to be fitted.

There are different forms of treatment, mine involved having brackets cemented to my teeth and wires connected between them to make the adjustments.

You have to attend the clinic every 6-8 weeks for further adjustments.

The whole process can last from 18 mths to 3 yrs (on average).
I'm about 8 months into mine.

Points to note.

Be prepared for some severe discomfort as your teeth get pulled and pushed around by the braces. It's like having constant toothache at times.

Your ability to eat certain foods will be severely affected.
Apples, carrots and anything crunchy like that are basically out.
You'll get used to it and work out ways round it but it's a bit of a pain at first.

Cleaning your teeth properly will now take approx 20-30 mins.

The trips back and forth to the clinic can be a pain. I always book an early appointment and travel up the night before just to break up the 400 mile round trip! The transit accommodation (for JR's) is basic and don't expect to get a good signal on your mobile. FORGET about mobile broadband- it's in the biggest black hole for signal coverage ever!

Hope that helps. If you need any more gen, PM me.
