Hi I am not sure if this is in the right section but I will try my luck anyway.

I was wondering how I can obtain a 7.5 tonne lorry license within the RAF, I am still in trianing to join 4624 sqn and am off to Halton for basic recruit training next week. But do you have to be 21 to take the test, I am 20 until October, is there a cost if I can do it through the RAF, I am based at Brize Norton and do I have to have finished training or can I get on with it if I show an interest in taking it? Any help would be much appreciated.

To drive any HGV in the armed forces the minimum age is 17.
The only way to get this added to your license is either to join as an MT driver or is your SQN requires all members to hold a HGV.
You can apply if there is a requirement for the sqn to have one. But apart from that I doubt you will get one.

Hope that helps

Oh ok,, well I am going to be a mover and I know we need several different licenses for all the vehicles etc, I was just wondering whether there was a way to get ahead with it and start learning to get my 7.5 tonne license asap. Thanks for the reply

If your Sqn needs it you will get it
However as a mover it's unlikly you will need it unless you are on MAMS or JHSU

Also while very commendable that you want to get a head start, it will cost YOU money, if you wait until your in it will cost you NOTHING.

Talkin about drivers licenses do the raf put you through your driving test i know the army does but is it the same case with the raf?

On the downside, if the RAF pays for it, standby for a surprise OOA away from trade, driving a Landrover in Helmand. Don't laugh, its happened.

Your not wrong mate.

I had the RAF pay for my license and gained the Q-BDL and about 7 years later they ping me for driver/escort duties in Iraq providing FP cover. :PDT_Xtremez_14:
They said that because the RAF paid for it I would be in the first group of people to be pinged for a driving job.
