Am off there for a week next week, any hints/tips on what or what not to do, places to go, places not to go please? Am off to Luperon Beach Resort. And what did you think of it?

We were there last year (Dominican Republic) I can't remember the name of the place but it wasn't Luperon Beach it was the next resort along the coast.

My tips would be don't stay solely in the resort, we made this mistake although at the time enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. I've talked to a couple of people since who made the effort to get out and about and am sorely jealous. Oh and do take plenty of immodium... seriously, I have the most robust stomach of anyone I know, I spent half the holiday on the bog,, my wife spent virtually all of it within 5 yards of the nearest!

It's a beautiful place and people are really friendly, very very poor though.

Agree with Chiefy.............take plenty of imodiom.
You will need it, and it is about six times as expensive as it is here.
You will hear plenty of stories about food poisoning, but ignore them.
The main cause for stomach problems..................is that they cook in cocoanut oil.
Cocoanut is a natural laxative that we are not used to. It will go through you like a dose of the sh!ts.................literally.
Take at least 24 tabs of imodium per person.

Dom Rep is cheap and fun. Enjoy it.

Went last year at the Casa Marina Reef in Puerta Plata, brilliant holiday, get out on the excursions, as said the local populace are very poor but remarkably cheerful, ace climate, nice time all round.:PDT_Xtremez_19:

Don't let the thieving gits take your bags off you at the airport. Some dude carried my suitcase all of 20 meters and demanded ten bucks off of me.

And also remember to keep 20 dollars for when you leave. You have to pay to get out.

If you get a chance, do the quad biking :PDT_Xtremez_43:

Try the water park in puerto plata, it's worth the white knuckle taxi ride to try a different pool.

Give the monster jeep safari a go as well as it takes you to where some of Jurassic Park was filmed.

The amber museum in puerto plata is worth a butchers as well.

I liked that too!
Avoid the fort at the entrance to puerta plata unless you're into your history, its not that impressive.

The diving is good for a first timer on the north coast but no idea where your resort is. the dive centres will take you diving for about £40 each to a reef around 12 metres down, plenty of fish and if you do it take a banana with you they'll swarm you!

Am off there for a week next week, any hints/tips on what or what not to do, places to go, places not to go please? Am off to Luperon Beach Resort. And what did you think of it?

Nice place to visit, we went to Luperon Tropical beach hotel in 2006 and had a good time. We were there for 2 weeks. One thing we didn't like was that fact at weekends locals come in and basically take over the place. We complained to our rep that we weren't informed about this but his reply was " Our brochure states that the resort is shared with other nationalities" this we accepted as germans, french, italians and so forth. Not ignorant locals that appeared to starve themselves and eat for a week. I only mention this as we weren't prewarned about it.

The driving standard over there is horrendous but entertaining.

Back on to the good stuff, we did a tour to a paradise island that was excellent, a speed boat to a remote island in gorgeous blue seas followed by a snorkel around the island feeding fish. we also went to the Ocean world and had a dolphin encounter that was brilliant.

There is plenty of pools a nice beach (one with a swim up bar), watch out for the street vendors haggle the b@st@rds down and then walk away the usually call you back.

The animation team were a good laugh and put on some good shows for a measly pay packet. Blackie and Felix were characters and did the entertainment usually grabbing people up on stage, me included to do a michael jackson impression, not sure if they will still be there.

we booked some of our excursions from a company near the hotel as they were cheaper than the tour operator, there is a marina near the hotel that has a excursion company near it.

The food was good and plenty of it, we all suffered dodgy stomachs and imodium and such stuff was used so as mentioned in other posts take some with you. Al a carte restaurants as well

Don't drink the water only bottled. At the all inclusive bar my old man tipped the barmen now and then so he could get packets of fags instead of a couple a time.

A couple of pictures 2 from the island and 1 of the pool we used. We got to know the "Towel Man" as my daughter called him Ishmael was his name and he reserved our sunbeds every day.

You can read reviews on websites as we did and we ended up with a mixed view of what to expect. we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks there.

At the end of the day no matter where you go you can't please everyone. Some folk moaned that the food was to "different" if they wanted just british food they should have stayed at home.

Go and have a great time.

the 2 sites below are what we looked at for reviews etc as well as trip advisor.

Cheers for the replies guys!
The week was fantastic, didn't need the Immodium at all, thankfully. Only had one dodgy day with the weather and we were on the Puerto Plata Top View Trip that day, also did the Tip Top Catermaran and Mega Trucks Tour, really enjoyed it, it was everything you lot said it would be, would go again, only this time for 2 weeks!!
