Having lurked around for a few days I thought I would drop in and say "hello" formally. I am one of the lucky ones who reached 55 and escaped just before JPA and LEAN etc took hold (anyone remember NMS?)

I am now happily spending my pension on living the dream in SW France where booze and fuel can still be had at sensible prices.

must be an advert for anyone to stick it out and make a go of the job that to me (left in '97) seems not quite the fun it used to be???

Thanks for the welcome

Thanks for the welcome

To theladf - posting history not that exciting: Halton, Gutersloh, Cosford, Bruggen, Brampton (twice), Blanford/Shrivenham, back to Halton, Bracknell (DS), Strike, Innsworth, Gosport. Odd dets here and there.

What did I do? Helped turn out the odd techie or two (not that I mean techies are odd, and if they are it's no my fault), a bit of basket weaving in between in Germany; played with computers rather a lot including one nice tour when HM payed for me to play wargames around the world at her expense. Ended up working with the Medics - the poster said it would be handy for the ferry.

Living the dream

Living the dream

Hi bigsteviej - yup, 'aint half bad. Just back from sitting under the stars in the jacuzzi, having demolished a bottle of wine that cost less than the price of a pint in UK. Funny thing is that one of the reasons I ended up out here is that, having lived in quarters all my career, I had two choices - either a house in the south of France and retire on the pension or take out a mortgage and work in UK. No brainer really.

As for it being the end of summer, that doesn't happen for at least another 6-8 weeks. Then I can watch the snow building up on the mountain at the end of the valley and look forward to the ski season.

Incidentally, I am not the only ex RAF in the area - I recently discovered there is an ex Medic and Techie who run a holiday cottage just 3 villages away. We served together in RAFG - small world.

Welcome ninthace, thanks to your posts I have had to change my avatar to reflect the green envy I feel now! Good luck to you, its deseved if you could stick it out until 55, not many want to do that anymore. Enjoy the goat and chuckle at the state of things now that we have to put up with.
