Manchester City have confirmed Sven-Goran Eriksson has left his post as the Barclays Premier League club's manager.

Sven-Goran ErikssonThe Swede's departure, by mutual consent, brings to an end weeks of speculation over his future.

"I have enjoyed my time at Manchester City very much indeed and in particular, I would like to thank the fans, players and staff for their amazing support over the season," Eriksson told www.mcfc.co.uk.

"I wish the club - and everyone associated with it - much success in the coming years."

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra was reportedly unhappy with the former England coach's performance over the second half of the season, as his team slid out of contention for European qualification via their league placing.

That they eventually did make the UEFA Cup, albeit through the Fair Play League, was not enough to save Eriksson - who is thought to have been lined up as the next manager of the Mexican national team.

"The board of directors and all at Manchester City would like to thank Sven for his efforts and contributions throughout the season," said City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh.

"We wish him all the best for the future. Sven remains a friend of the club."

Reports this morning claimed City have made an official approach to Blackburn in an attempt to bring in Mark Hughes as Eriksson's replacement.

Just a pity they didn't give him time to do the job.

Sven leaves city

Sven leaves city

Same old same old city.

Usually if a manager doesn't do well then after 1 season he is given the boot.
Considering Sven got 2 wins over the reds, a highest points tally and uefa cup spot (back door i know) he did a great job and given time and fewer injuries we would have got better.

Fergie underachieved at the start of his reign and now look at him. Managers need time and so do the players.

Citys loss is some one elses gain. Frank has made a great mistake and with talk of Mark Hughes taking his spot not a good choice in successor. What has he achieved at blackburn.

hughes to talk to city

hughes to talk to city

Sky sports have just confirmed that mark hughes will be talking to city about vacant job and blackburn have allowed him to talk.:S

it might just be covering all bases but i am sure we could get someone who hasn't been involved with the dark side....

If that ex red ba$tard comes in I am off to support Manchester's other great team Altrincham town FC :PDT_Xtremez_41:

Another sign that football is going stark raving bonkers I'm afraid.

Avram Grant gets Chelsea to a CL final, one step further than the chosen one managed, and gets the sack presumably for not winning the thing. By that logic Terry and Anelka should also get the heave-ho as it was they who missed the pens!

SGE gets two wins over ManU and into Europe (not directly mind) and gets booted out for, apparently, not getting the club into the CL.

I mean, for crying out loud, there are 16 other teams that also didn't get intp the CL because to do so means you've got to displace ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool.

It seems these businessmen who buy into football clubs believe that they can run them like they run their company, i,e bang your fist on the boardroom table, hire the right suits and the money and success comes rolling in. Sport doesn't work like that, obviously, because your team of 11 bods is faced by another team of 11 bods who are equally, maybe more, determined to win even though they may not be quite so skillful. Money goes a long way towards getting you success in sport, but there are too many indeterminate factors that come into play that sometimes prevents the money having everything its own way.

They have installed a new door to the Manager's office, at The City of Manchester Stadium ... this particular model has been very successful at Sid James' Park and the Walkers Stadium.
