Never been to one of these things but with the age of our clan it made sense to not stray too far but also strive to leave these somewhat (at the moment) dismal shores...I saw Eurocamp on the forces discount website and had a look around...I was booking for next summer as you have to get it in early at my place...I got a whacking 30% off as an earlybird offer which meant I didn't have to opt for a 'luxury tent' as I could spend the dosh I'd saved on one of their apartment things that looks like a retirement house but it has all mod cons...and it's on a site with it's own waterpark with huge pools for the rugrats to tire themselves out in and a beach just over the dune...

Worth a look if you're in a position to book early and like me didn't like the fuel surcharges being shoved in my face for standard holidays to the sun...

I know it's digging up an old thread but I can recommend Eurocamp. With young children it's great.

I can recommend Ca'Savio near Venice. We drove there over a couple of days over the Brenner Pass. Great beach, good pools and great italian grub which all kids love.

Not long till we go now...Thanks for the endorsement! Must admit that everyone I've spoken to about Eurocamp hasn't had a bad word to say about them...We looked at the ferries a while back and they were coming in at £400...Phoned up Eurocamp and they came in at £200 so again a bonus...

To be honest, I think kids and adults alike have a better time at places such as Eurocamp, (there are other similar operators) because it is less commercialised and more geared up to relaxation and having a good time as opposed to resorts which are full of thumping club music and rip off merchants.

I've only camped overnight at a eurocamp site but found the facilities there were excellent.

Which ferries are you looking at Vim? Norfolk line were quite cheap although I haven't used one for a few years now.

OK hot wash-up for this type of holiday...

It was an education and there are things you should consider depending on the age spread of your party, time of year and location...

First of all though there was a accom faff...got shown to a mobile home that was surrounded by cig butts and bottle tops, no grass only sandy dried mud, weeds everywhere and the outside 'white goods' were all filthy...Plus there was no decking as was intimated online when booking it...Went to the courier and whinged...he was about 18 and began to stammer and look out of his depth...asked for the manager and he was about 20 and he claimed to have little or no power in these situations...a couple of girls turned up with rubbish sacks and began a fod plod but it was still fairly sh1t...Demanded a move and was told again it wasn't in his power so I demanded to talk to someone who could...customer services were chatty but were looking at the clock on a Saturday afternoon...They were closing at 1600 and it was already 1605! Stayed one night in the van and began the campaign first thing on Sunday...after much toing and froing we negotiated an upgrade to about the biggest thing they have there (a 3 bed superior) for an extra £80 instead of the £230 they originally wanted...

That all aside the pool at St Clarys Plage was great and you could walk to a big beach in about 10 mins...other better ones were only a short drive away...It was very windy most of the time which gave you issues when down the pool with wind chill when wet...There was stuff to do when the weather turned inclement but because of the weak pound everything was eye wateringly expensive...

And this is the crunch at the moment...a pint of Heineken in the camp bar was nearly £5! A small box of chips for the kids was £2.50...The only thing that didn't bite your arm off was wine in the supermarche which could still be found for €2 and still drinkable and this is where I found my solace and happy place! A trip to the tiny zoo at St Hilare de something or other cost 4 of us about £50!

So choose a venue where the camp has lots of cool weather options or indoor pools to save having to go on endless expensive outings...Never consider anything called a '2-bed Comfort' style of accomodation as its shockingly small...The minimum you need is a 3 bed comfort but ideally for an extra £70 for two weeks you might as well splash out on a superior or premier and enjoy your time in it!

Even though we had a bumpy start to this hol we can see the advantage of them...They are cheap, you have your car there to nip out and about and the kids loved it! We are looking at the Dordogne for next year...another hour in the car, further South so a little warmer and at a bigger park...If I book 12 days in the next few weeks for next year I get a premier accom for £680 instead of £1200...for a £50 deposit.

Glad you had a good time time big boy. We managed to wangle a couple of nights at the Santander resort in Northern Spain when doing ITC. A fantastic time had by all especially when camping out in your own tent. Cheap as chips and the only down side was having to wear silly caps in the pool. Those that know me will gather that my abundance of golden curly locks do not carry nits or lice!!

Interesting how some of these camps have a 'trunks only' rule for the pools...they police it as well...this one did but all the Brits and Irish ignored it and they gave up...I aint wearing Speedo's for no-one!

Oddest thing I saw was when I went to the camp bar to watch the Lions game last Saturday...Plenty of blokes in there and it could have been a good afternoon but because of the bar prices every just either sat with one pint and nursed it through the whole game or didn't buy one at all...

We nipped down to the local town and bought 2 squid boxes of vino, awful stuff but done the trick and then we didnt have to bother about the bar prices.
Anyways Vim, you are minted...cheap skate!!
