Evening. Came across this forum while brushing up on my service knowledge for my filter interview next Thursday.
Been wanting to join the RAF ever since I left secondary school 5 years ago. I did a year of college then applied for AMM(AV) passed AST and interview then never heard anything again from the corporal with regards to medical and PJFT, was in the AFCO at least once a month but never seemed to get anywhere, 2 years passed and my application got closed down. I spoke to the corporal who told me I had to wait a minimum of 2 years to re-apply, I was gutted to say the least.

So here I am now nearly 2 years after that and I approached the AFCO again, complete new set of staff who tell me I could have applied straight away, that doesn't matter as I've gained loads of life skills in that time and worked my way up the ladder at work (youngest assistant manager in the company, quite proud of that). Anyway, I put in my application a couple months ago, had to wait for replacement education certificates to be made up by the SQA (this took 2 long months...), put them in and got P3 presentation and interview date on the day.

I'll most likely just be a lurker but will keep my application progress updated with all who are interested and try to get involved in conversations around current affairs if I have anything worthwhile to chip in with.

So yeah, Hi

Welcome to the site and good luck with your application. Just out of interest where are you working now?

Thank you. I'm currently working for Hutchinson3G (Three UK) managing a team of 6, its good banter but not something I saw myself doing for more than a year. Good things come to those who wait I guess.

Graeme welcome,

It seems that you have learnt a very important lesson already! That will aid you throughout your career.

The person saying "no" standing in front of you maybe misinformed, not understand or just lazy.

Ask questions to ensure accuracy of advice received, this place is a good start. No such thing as a stupid question.

LQ :D

Definitely learned from that one. I'm a few years older now and I can tell if I'm getting fobbed of or not (I can thank my beloved HR team for that). Hoping that these few years will help me when it comes to the filter and when I get to P-RTS as I know your behaviour is looked at and is a direct reflection on how you are as a person.

You won't be managing a team in the RAF after 2 years. Unless you join as an officer.
But if your're interseted in electronics etc then AV would still be an interesting job and would give you skills that will carry you well when you head back to civvy straße.

It might be tough going from being a leader of 6 and calling the shots to total subservience in basic and trade training...and you'll spend quite a few years tugging the forelock before you get a chance to lead again. Good luck anyway!

I'm actually looking forward to having a job where I just need to get on with it along side learning something completely new. I try bloody hard at everything I do which is one of the reasons I got bumped up the ladder at work. I love the fiddly electronic side of life, I build midi kit and sort out electrics and electronics in cars on the side, that and being 5 miles from Lossiemouth always been interested in aircraft. Dad used to take me to see the Tornado's taking off when I was little. The RAF is where I see myself being most comfortable and happy, the more time I spend researching my chosen trade the more I want it.

Cant wait for Thursday now so I can get along to the AFCO and sit my interview :D
